Great video! I was unable to get the hang of this despite Jimbo's sage advice, & went back to the DE as my head-shaving tool of choice. This inspires me to give it another go.
Very well done shave. Have you tried a regular straight? I am thinking it would be better for your skin. Those Feathers can be brutal.

I do not have enough courage to use a straight on my head yet (maybe with time I will). I say to you job well done, I enjoyed watching the video.
I have several regular straights, that I also use. If you know how to control the feather, its not hard on your skin at all, as a matter of fact, its the razor the gives me the least skin irritation/razor burn.Quote:

Hey Pastor, have you ever tried shaving your head when you have a lot of growth, like 5 mm? I can do an OK job if I do it every 2 days, but if I let it go for a while, I do a very spotty job, and I also wreck the edge of my blade less than halfway through the shave. I don't have this problem when I shave my face; I actually get a better shave if I have more growth. Any words of wisdom?
I used to shave my head with a straight every other day, and while enjoyable I also found that it was wrecking my edges. I'm thin on the crown but elsewhere my hair is quite thick. After weeks of experimenting thinking that it might be technique, I finally threw in the towel and bought my first DE strictly for head shaving.Quote:

Dude, Thomas.....again I say it; you have real big ones to put a Feather to your head.
In another video you mentioned that you don't like the Headblade. What experience have you had with it, and why don't you like it? I use it every once in a while and it works pretty good. I liked the way it glides better than a mach3 on my head (it would stick more than the headblade and get caught up on my hair).

If I want that I have to hold the headblade between my fingers and use it as a regular multiblade. That is not very convinient. Besides that, I find the blades to be a little rough.
That's what I did, too. My head hair is fine (much finer than my beard hair) but also more densely spaced. I never figured out whether my wrecked edges were the fault of my hair or my technique, but eventually I too threw in the towel and bought a DE and a Wahl balding clipper. I also use the Wahl for trimming excess body hair, and the DE is nice to have for days when I don't have time for the straight, so I don't regret either purchase, but all the same I would like to have succeeded, rather than failed, to shave my head with the straight, if only for bragging rights.Quote:

Spring has arrived in the Southern Hemisphere and I usually do a head shave to mark it's arrival. I like to head shave during the summer months and this marks the beginning for me. However the old Mach 3 really goes through blades and they're too expensive these days.

SUCCESS ! The odd tinge of pink in the lather, can't see the back of my head but SWMBO assures me it's not butchered. No major missed patches either.
It's been about 10 days since a close clipper shave so there was probably a bit much hair to get a good feel for how this was going to work out. First pass debulked everything down to where I felt I could actually "shave" properly. The second pass went surprisingly well and both ears are still attached.
Interesting thinking about what is happening here. Watching you go from front to back it struck me that the stroke starts off ATG then switches to WTG at the crown. Once you move away from centre a lot of the strokes are XTG.
All in all I am happy with my first attempt and looking forward to the next shave with just stubble as a starting point. Only right handed today but will start experimenting with the left later - it seems to work OK on my face.
To anyone else tempted... it really isn't as hard as you imagine. :)
When I shave which takes me about 30-45 ,min I do face,head and neck.I use a second small handheld mirror to get the very back of my head,but have no probs.I use either a Dovo Best quality or Special and have no dulling on my edges.Sometimes I even start shaving the shoulders(I'm semi hairy heh)If I could I would shave my whole body...this stuff gets a little addicitve haha ! The head shave is very satisfying.:)

I wear a beard, so I am learning to shaving with a straight on my head. For those interested, I've found that Shaving my head with a DE on the first 1 or 2 passes has made learning the "muscle memory" of straight shaving much easier and has kept me from slicing my ears off while learning.
I found on my first shave that if I tried shaving with the straight right away, the coarseness of my head stubble caused the blade to "stick" or "jump". This was pretty scary, especially around the ears.
By shaving a pass or two with the DE, I'm learning how to manuever the straight around my head. Once I'm really comfortable with that and the blade feels steady in each of my hands, I'll stop using the DE and start shaving solely with my straight.
I've also found that shaving my head destroys my razor's edge. I've read around here that using a near wedge or half hallow as opposed to a quarter or full hollow helps this on the head.... I'll have to do some shopping and let you know.

Pastor - a great video. Im still learning to do face shaving with a Feather. What I found incredible was the accuracy of your strokes, especially on the back of your head. Think it will be some time before I attempt that. Hate to say it, but I' still with an old Norelco for the head. Definitely Not a close shave. Thanks for the video.
