Hi. I shave my head & I've found that, no matter what post shave product I use, or if i dont use one, I get a ridiculously oily scalp a few hours later. I haven't tried too many options but have tried perfumed & unperfumed aftershaves, balms, isocol, and proraso preshave cream. I've also tried showering with soaps, body washes & just water. Whatever I do or don't do, my head is slimy like old ham by lunchtime. Any advice to prevent further embarrassment would be greatly appreciated.
try to rub alum block on your head post shave instead of using any other creams or post shave products. rub with alum after final hot water rinse and then let it sit until the shower is done and then hit it cold for a good minute to rinse it off and cool the scalp. the heat of a shower causes skin to sweat profusely for up to an hour even after the shower ends. the alum is an antiperspirant and the cold water prevents the sweating to even try.
This is exactly what I do. I suffered from the same problem. I shave my head with Williams mug soap. Yes, Williams and my trusty straight. Williams seems to do teh trick too after experimenting with soaps. after shaving I first rinse with hot water then cold. Then run a Alum block along my head and allow it to dry not wiping it off by towel. Then I apply witch hazel afterwords. I do not use aftershave on my head. I do not suffer from a oily head anymore. About a month back or so I had a smooth head for around two weeks. I shaved it for my districts swim meet (along with the rest of me...) for a full on dolphin effect...
anyway, I found that midway through the day I was getting pretty oily myself, especially since my head skin had not adjusted to not having the chlorine drying it out it was just pumping out oil! I started doing some lunchtime baby powder apps to dry it out. not a lot, just a bit on my hands and rubbed it around. Cut the shine nicely!

trimmy, i learned that valuable lesson only once, and that was many years ago, i shave my head also, and after the one and only time i sunburned it, i vowed to never and i mean NEVER let that happen again, after the peeling was done, my god the itch drove me crazy for weeks till the subdermal layer healed, i was about mad when it was over
I whack witchhazel on my head - seems to work but I have never really had an issue with an oily head, so...
For sun protection I too learned the lesson the hard way with sunburn. I used to use sunblock as a general thing, but now I only use it if I am at the beach or whatever. Now I have hats (not caps!). There's a hat in the car, a hat in the office, a hat in my briefcase, a hat in my man-bag. No matter where I am, there is a hat available and I wear it. I don't care if I look a twit - all I have to do is look at my father's head with the skin cancer burn scars all over it, and I am thankful for a wide-brimmed hat.
On an unrelated note, also watch the backs of your hands with sunburn and skin cancers. I have a can of spray on 30+ SPF sunscreen which I will often apply to my forearms and hands if I have to do work outside for any extended period of time.

Finally broke down and shaved the ole. dome again, forgot how nice it felt. Was gonna wait a little longer, let old man winter ease up a bit more, but the hair, or should I say lack there of finally got me down so I swmbo take the clippers to it
I just ordered some Headblade lotion matte, anyone ever use that? Also picked up one of their Headblade Sport razors (it was on sale for $6), used it this morning and cut myself (ouch!). You have to push the razor on this model. They have a newer model that you can pull instead, that makes more sense to me. I generally use a DE, but does anyone use the Headblade stuff? Or Dovo's Striglia? Or maybe the Rolling razor, I think it's called that....
I just use a Schick quatro (coz I'm lazy). I'd like to do it with a straight or at least a DE but the Schick is so quick & gets so close I always give in.
I have used the glossy head-lube but I tend to be pretty glossy up top anyway. Maybe I should give the matte a try. Does it really give a matte finish? I just rub an alum block on my head now. Does the trick magnificently.
Not sure if the matte really works, I just ordered it based on reviews on Headblades site, supposedly it'll give you a matte finish. As soon as I get it, I'll do a review here.
On another note, you should give a DE a try. I can shave my face and head in 10 minutes, and I'm pretty anal about stubble on my head I usually get a "so smooth it's sticky shave". Although the ease/convenience of using a modern razor is understandable.
I tried a DE on my head a couple of shaves ago. Once the scabs heal, I'll give it another go :)

Had that problem when I first tried the Muhle R41 on my head, it scalped me and I didn't even know until I applied the Alum. I think I did a dance, and not a happy one.
For a head shave I usually choke up on the handle of the razor and drop a finger or two down and use them as a guide to keep the razor at the proper angle.
Good advice. I tried a similar approach. Think I just need practice :)

Just thought I'd pass along this note, today was the first time I've run a straight across my dome in many months. Job went nice and smooth. No nicks and gladly no tugging

Got my order from Headblade, Lotion Matte finish. Does what it says kills any shine and seems to last. I only used it once so far, and am happy with the results, seems worth it. They sent along Headshed (scrub), and shave cream samples with a couple of stickers, and 3 or 4 coupons for a $1 off and they don't expire until 2016, so that was an unexpected suprise. When I order something I usually don't get freebies, it's a nice touch.
I've used there shave cream before, it's very slick but stinks (heavy menthol and not in a good way). I wish they would come up with something a little more tradtional in their line up as far as that goes.
I use the razorock as well to put on my shaved dome after each head shave I also use copper one 50 in the summer and headblade 30 the rest of the yearQuote:

I shave my head with a King of Shaves disposable cartridge razor (2 passes) or my Merkur 37C with a Feather blade (just the 1 pass required) and use whichever shave soap I'm using on my chin with my straights, usually Mitchells Wool Fat or Proraso "green". After a cold water rinse I rub a small amount of E45 moisturiser on, works for me.
I must admit here lately the DE rotation has came out much more often for both face and dome. I must confess the Merkur 37C is a fine tool. However, today's Sunday shave and haircut was with a straight. I guess it just depends on my mood and/or time constraints.
This happens to me, too; but I have a bit of a quandary... if I don't use any sort of moisturizer after my shave, my scalp gets tight and the skin dries out... but if I do, my head gets oily. I haven't tried witchhazel; what is that supposed to do?
Darth, WH is a anti-oxident, astringent, good for acne. I just found out apparently it helps prevent sweating?! don't know about that one. I looked it up on Wikipedia........Look at Medicinal uses
I use it because my head would get oily, and would develop lines (like it was dry? even though it was oily, I could have lubed a bicycle chain) and the WH seems to keep my head from getting oily and I really don't see the lines now.
