The same hone twice!

Just got another phig yesterday. I had one lapped it for an hour, sold it bought another. Lapped this one for an hour also. I know there are all different but I feel like I got the same one twice. 2 lower corners. Anyway had a go today.Chosera 1k, norton 4/8 . I did about 40 figure 8 to bring up a slurry. The stone feels like glass but yet its gritty when im honing with it. I lapped with 325,600 dmt. I guess I got a dog like my first one. It game me a decent hht after the hone, but i can get one after the 8 norton. 50 half strokes, 50 circles on slurry dilute then 20 x dilute to all water and 20 x. Stropped and hht 3-4. Same hht as my coti. So the verdict? Sounds like the 12k is an 8k.

But the true test is how does the shave test feel compared to off the 8k or Coticule?

Shave test failed. It shaved but not very sharp or smooth. put the razor down after 1 pass. Scratch pattern from the scope show smoother than the 4k but rougher than the 8k. Whatever that means. Got hht after the strop though 100 laps. Its a dog. 2nd one.

Go with the nainwa 12 k I think it's a few bucks more and it's a fantastic stone

I have the chosera 10, naniwa12 a jnat finisher and a coti/bbw combo. And I use film also. I didn't get good results from the first 1, so I got another one and it was a dog like the first one.

No such things in the world of naturals. Apples & oranges etc..
If it works in your progression you have a substitute for a 12 k but the stone itself is not quantifiable in that sense due to the particles having a different nature.eg scratches can look coarser but may only be wider not deeper.
Natural stones can be a bit of a lucky dip.

Yes I can see that. I've heard of people buying 4 until they got the right stone. The shave wasn't sharp enough IMO. I may try some slurry stone as is recomended by some. I didn't do that well with the dmt slurry, or maybe I didn't break it down enough. But the stone itself may not be capable of producing the edge I'm looking for. Seems on this one im not alone. I got it now so I will play around a bit I guess.

Possibly so. The irony is I can remember the scratches from my c12k looked bigger than the ones from my coticule yet the c12k always improved the edge off that particular coti. Gotta love the quantum mechanics of honing.

In general you can say they're all different, but if they happen to come from the same block or batch they can be near identical :)

How are you comparing the stria from the different stones, Side by side?

As said visual stria width is not a definitive test/result as to polishing of the edge. Also grinding on a diamond plate for an hour with two stones may have trashed your plates. These can be very hard stones and if the plates are trashed, you may not have any effect in finishing the stone. Your stone may still be unfinished.

Hard Arks make great finishing stones for hard naturals.

Put some steel to the diamond plate and see if it is cutting.

For all but the softest Natural stones use loose Silicone Carbide, don’t waste your diamond plates. It only takes a minute to trash a diamond plate.

I see that natural stones leave a different finish on the scope. I looked at one on a dialed in coti. It was smoother than what I got off my cnat, and the ultimate shave test was the coti edge I could shave with all day and night, the cnat was dullish. Im sure if I work it some more I may get something more out of it. I don't find any issues with lapping with my dmts. Ihave 120, 325 600 up to 8k. I use the 325 usually unless I have a lot to do and then I swithch to my 120. But I always finish on the 600. They cut steel no problem. I always lap under running water and with light pressure and have no issues to date.
