Hi, just a quick question please,
I'm learning to hone.
I sharpened my dovo and tried it. It was ok-ish with the grain but i have a long way to go in the honing department.
So, would i take this razor straight back to the 1k and start again or is there some way to reset the blade ,so to speak?
I read some thing one time about dragging the blade on a glass bottle..
Or will the 1k just re reset the bevel?

Does it feel as if it needs to be stropped or sharpened mid shave (does it get duller during I mean)? Yes= go back to 1k and redo the bevel; it's not completely set. No= try 10 passes on your mid hone (4k, 5k, 6k? you didn't say), then finish, strop and test again. May just need to be a bit sharper is all. Unless the edge is chippy, damaged, or ragged you shouldn't need to drag the edge across anything. Most do it after they are done sanding, buffing, b/c the edges tend to have micro chips, or very small serrations from restoring. That helps to smooth the very tip of the edge out, and to me atleast, helps speed the smooth bevel setting w/out the need to hone those "teeth" out, then setting the bevel, which just to me requires more wear on the spine (if you hone w/out tape) than necessary.

Don't know if I would go all the way back to the 1k. Try the 4k again and work your way up. Then a good strop.
Or you may want to check the edge with a magnifier and see if it is smooth or has a rough look. If it looks rough with no nicks then I would first try a good strop.

I just honed, following Lynnes tutorial...
I started to shave and i thought , yes ive nailed it. But by the time i started my ATG pass i realised that it was no longer sharp.
It was cutting mid level arm hair pre shave.
One thing i have to bare in mind is that ive always had trouble with this razor.
I sent it twice for honing by a top honer and it came back kinda blunt. My bro tried his honing skills on it and couldnt fix it. The only time this razor was sharp was when my bro went mad with his range of diamond pastes on it and finaly it was mega sharp but it didnt last, maybe it was a wire edge..
I dont wanna try to hone my realy expensive blades until i know what im doing.
I honed my younger brothers one and only blade and hes happy with it..

First and foremost, if you don’t have a correct and proper bevel all of the ‘magic pastes’ and strops in the entire world are totally useless!!!
While I do have a 1k I set bevels on the 4K all the time! it just takes time and patience!!
Lack of setting a good and proper bevel is the most common source of problems when you are starting how to hone and hone correctly!
I’ve shaved off of a 4K and it’s not bad! The 8K is much better and I could live off of a 8K for the rest of my life!
Take your time! Honing comes easier for some than other!

Losing an edge mid shave can be a bad temper, wire edge or bevel that wasn't set as well as some other things Im sure. When I was first starting to hone, I would start over at the 1k. Im not saying you should, but I would and do the pyramid, you cant go wrong with it.

The one question none of us have asked is what brand of razor are you trying to hone.
I've figured it all out.
I dont want to start any arguments . That is what happened last time i asked why my Dovo wouldnt sharpen ,even after 2 pro hones.
I just checked my younger brothers razor, the one i honed last week .. He has had 2 perfect shaves with it and it cuts mid level arm hair easly and feels sticky on the thumb pad test..
The problem is that cursed razor £200 Dovo...
The last time i asked why this razor was duff only one person made sence to me, he said maybe it was a finicky blade..All the other ppl questiond my stropping and so on...
I will polish that blade, oil it and put it away for life.. I even bought red wood scales for it ..
