I need a hone for the bevel. I would appreciate advice. I am looking at a few:
Norton 1000. I know this is popular. The other ones I was thinking of are King 800 or Bester 1000. Also I can get Lobster hones here: There is the hard and soft type 1000 grit:Waterstones - Great Knife Sharpening Supplies
I can get these locally and to order through the mail would add around $30.
Would one be better if I also wanted to use it for knives?

Hello my Northern Neighbor!
When I first started learning to hone I used a King 800 to set a bevel. I’ve since given a member who needed a ‘bevel setter’ the 800.
I still use a King 1200 to set a bevel; but only on Rare Occasions!!!

The only reason I used it instead of the Norton 4K was due to the good amount of rust on the entire blade including the edge (on one side)!
I didn’t want to die of old age from just trying to get any rust pockets out of the edge with the 4K so I had ‘sound’ steel!!!
I also didn’t use the 1200 to ‘fully’ set the bevel, after checking and seeing that the bevel was forming and NO rust remained in the edge, I went straight to the 4k with slurry.
For 'Most' jobs I’ve found that by learning how to use the Norton 4k I can ‘usually’ set a bevel fairly quickly and easily!
With all of this said, having a 1K for ‘some work’ is ‘Handy’!
I have no experience with the Norton 1k but if it performs as well as its Big Brother’s the 4K and 8K, it will probably serve you well.

For bevel setting, I use a 250/1k King combo stone. Of course, as for razors, I just use the 1k side. I also use this stone for sharpening my kitchen knives.
DMT 1200 or chosera 1k. The dmts never needs lapping. It just needs to be broken in first. The chosera is a very hard and fast cutter. And doesnt need frequent lapping. My 2 favorites. But as was said, unless you are restoring, you dont set bevels very often. Im sure a norton or king 1k would fill the need you have for less than the dmt or the chosera.
Get 1k Chosera is the best combo of speed and feedback for bevel setter that we have so far.
If you have the funds get one and you are set.
Chosera will work great on knives as well
I'm a fan of the Naniwa superstone 1000. Moves a lot of steel and doesn't scratch deeply.
+1 on that. The naniwa superstone is quite good too but nothing beats the chosera 1k IME. Any of them will do it though, just that those two do it quicker.Quote:

Yes it is said if you have the funds. If the bevel is yhe biggest part of honing doesn't it make sense to put most of your eggs in that basket? Chosera is an investment.

The site you linked seems to rate the 1k Chosera for both European & J/knives. It's popular for razors too so without owning one I'd say that seems a good choice.
Setting bevels on knives can mean a whole lot more grinding than with razors tho so a separate coarser stone may be of use for knives in addition to a 1k.
Chosera. I got the 800 and it's excellent and a bit cheaper than the 1K
Some blades can be handled easier on the side of the hone. I have my choseras to 10k lapped on 1 side, and my suehiro 20 k. If I have to set a bevel I do it on the 600 then the 3 and up.Quote:

The Chosera 1k is very good, and is a great combination of the Shapton on Glass stones and the Naniwa SS. To me it feels like it has the softness of the Naniwas with the cut of the Shaptons. I've also found that this stone plays very well with all the other main makes (Norton, Naniwa and Shapton). At the last London RazorCon I used a load of different stones and they all worked really well with the Chosera 1k as a bevel setter.
However: My go to bevel setter is the Shapton 1k. I've used both the Naniwas and the Shaptons, and I've found the Naniwas are good for softer steels and hollow grounds but the Shaptons will do it all, and are faster cutters and dont warp when they get wet. It used to drive me nuts trying to hone a huge Sheffield wedge on the Naniwa SS's, and having to keep soaking and cleaning them.
So 99% of the time now I just go 1/4/8/16k Shapton, then an Asagi. And the reason I dont use the Chosera as much is that the Shaptons all play well together as they're part of a set.

I like to use a DMT for setting a new bevel. I don"t have a Chosera and I hear very good comments about it, but I do have a shapton glass stone 1000k, a Norton 1000k and a Naniwa 1000k and let me tell you this, the DMT is alot faster than those 3. If you are going to use it on knives it is perfect for those new and very hard steels such as S30V, D2, CPM-M4 and others.
Which DMT are you using? If its anything less than a 1k grit then of course it will be more useful for setting a bevel on a brand new razor. Myself, I've only used my DMT on a brand new razor that has never had a bevel set..and by brand new I mean custom.
I use a DMT 1200k Just a few passes and is ready.
I've got a JNS 1K for bevel setting now, but I've also used 15-micron and 30-micron polishing film.
An Okudo has become my "go to" bevel setter, not super fast but fast enough with a diamond nagura (DMT 600).
