My 2 stones of the day.

I bought 2 old wodden boxes with stones in it.
Was funny because the guy was selling them for the antique coffers.
That is what I got.

Stones are 2 inches large by 7.5 and 8 inches.

I followed the instructions here and tried the easy off oven cleaner.
The oil started to thaw almost right away.
I did not let the easy off for long, 2 minutes max at time. This stuff is strong and I only wanted a surface cleanup.
Both stones cleaned up nicely and it took around 10 minutes to remove the old oil on it.

This is the first stone and I don't know what it is. Had a sticker one small side but the Cleanup destroyed it.
Its a porous stone and still smells oils after 2 boilings.

Any toughts on what this stone might be?

The second one got me excited.
Im almost a hundred percent sure its a coticule.
I did not boiled it and its pretty non porus.
The only problem was the banana shape.

So Here goes the lapping time!

The stone made some strange "fractal" slurry as both sides where joining in the middle.
The small "trees" where growing bigger and bigger.

Et voila!

Took me more than an hour of lapping but I think it was worth it.
Can't wait to try it.
I will also try to find a bout to make some slurry.

I don't know about the first one, there are many stones with that appearance. Around here, it'd probably be an Arkansas stone. The second one is definitely a slate backed coticule. That's a very nice find. And yes, a slurry stone is a must. Keep us posted about that, if you have too much trouble finding it locally, drop me a line & I'll send a small one to you.

Gotta love 'fractal slurry'. There's an idea for a thread. :)

The first one looks like Washita. Also if there was a sticker on side by any chance it was not brown ish. If it was I would be almost certain it was Norton Washita.
As for the other I would say yes one side is Coti but would not be surprised if the other was BBW. Better pictures of sides would say more.

Nice score! I would be surprised if the backing of the coticule wasn't a BBW :D

To check if it is a BBW, raise some slurry with a diamond plate or a piece of sandpaper. BBW slurry is distinctly purple, whereas slate slurry is white.

Nice finds first one looks like a nice Arkansas stone
the second one is a perty piece of Belgian coticule

For the washita I read its more a woodworker stone. Maybe a bevel setter.

The Washita is good for a quick sharpening of a carbon steel pocket knife. Nice Coticule !
