In recent times, several new stones have surfaced and as usual, many of us have jumped on the bandwagon and gave them a try. Examples are Welsh Thuringian, Chinese 2500, Zulu Grey, Gokumyo 20k to name some of them.
Just wondering which of the newly popular stones have caught your fancy. Do you have a new found favorite stone? Mine is the Gokumyo 20k. It seems to have simplified my finishing process for the good.
Did any of the newer stones ratchet up your honing significantly?
+1 on the 20K. Matter of fact, it was a post you made Jerry, that the yen was down to the dollar, that finally drove me over the edge to go for it. Glad I did. I'm still using my Escher on some of them but the Gokumyo is such a great stone IME.Quote:

Good stones, but not something that will be a permanent part of my daily honing.
There are other naturals that do all they do, and they do it better. imho.
The Sigma 13K is another stone I like.
Good finisher, but the color/pattern on it does tend to cover water on it, and I find myself honing on it untill too dry for my taste.
For kitchen knives, it is superb though!
Other stones worth mentioning,to me, are the lower grit Suehiro Gokumyo Debado's. (I know, quite the mouthful:) )
I have those in 400-2000 and 6000 Grit.
Very good stones, with excellent feedback.
But they will not knock my Chosera's off the top spot on the podium:)
At least not yet!
Shame that this is just for new hones otherwise I would have one contender too.

Finally have figured out how to get a shaving edge off the 10k but honestly it is not as good as just adding a finisher after that level...
I have not tried the Gokumyo 20K. But of the other hones named my Zulu Grey performs very well.
Suehiro 20k is great as was said. 1/2 micron particles are 30k though. But I guess that's another post!
Or they call it 20k but it is 0.5 micron, we have no idea. I have tried other 30k stones and the Gokumyo is right there in scratch pattern.Quote:

And Thank You, Birnando for chiming in on the Debados v. the Choseras. I've been mulling over that choice.
One I've not heard much on, other than PMs is the G10, which I'm contemplating as a possible replacement for my much loved Nani12 before the G20. One member described the edges as so sharp he'd hesitate to try the G20. 'Sounds like an awful nice rock to me. I presume its similar to the 20 in that there's no need for soaking, slurry, etc.
Reading about some of these synthetics has me wondering why I bother with naturals that make me waffle between questioning my abilities and questioning the stones' potential.
I guess it's fun that way.
I can't say that I don't have similar feelings. I have one natural, a Zulu. I get good edges off of it in some instances, other times not. So sometimes I finish on a Nan 12K, other times the Zulu. But having experienced the edges off of the 20K stone mentioned, I may opt to get one of those. My 12k stone will deliver a good edge no matter what I've put on it. Too much and its harsh. But it will deliver a keen edge every time. The 20K sounds to be a consistent performer and might be a better option to have at hand while I continue to experiment with my one natural. This whole honing business is quite a fascinating hobby. You experiment a little bit, you learn a little bit, you employ what you learn. Then the cycle repeats.Quote:
