I live in Houston, TX and am looking for someone close by to help me get the hang of honing. I have all the supplies, coticules, etc. but can't seem to get a good edge on my own. Thanks.

Take a look at this thread...

That would be the best place to get hands-on! I've never made it to a local meet due to conflicting schedules but recently worked with a local Mentor and it has made an incredible difference... I had all the stuff and 90% of the skill but putting it all together took someone who had walked that path before.
Good luck and enjoy the journey... It is sure to be well worth it!

In the mean time think good bevel set. If you don't have that then :banghead:
Just make the meet up in Oct. If it is an emergency I might be able to find some time but to be honest. it will not be a one time learned thing. Honing takes practice and patience. IMHO don't think a coti of unknown quality would make a good learning honer. Kind of like learning on a new "PHIG". Fixed grit hones like nortons, shaptons, and naniwa's are easier. You get a better idea what is happening and where you are at. A coti's quality can't be learned if you aren't sure what your one honing ability is.
PM me some more and we can try and come up with a plan....
