It seems like a finisher. Both sides are quite smooth. I know determining an unmarked stone is a crazy crapshoot, but wondering if any of you guys have seem something roughly similar.

what are the dimensions of the stone? 8x2?
It seems as though at least one side is completely saturated with oil... which could point to a lower grit stone more suitable for chisels and pocket knives.
More like 7X2.5 or so. didn't have a tape with me. I've encountered vintage oilstones for tools a lot and it did not have that feel to it at all tbh with you. This stone confused me. Didn't buy it, just had me curious.
Sometimes stones removed from a box will look like a combo stone while in fact one side is clean and the other dirty. I can't tell if that's the case here.
It was two distinct materials, of that much I am certain. I've seen stones pulled out of wooden boxes, I kind of know what you're getting at but this wasn't like that. One side was slightly coarser but they were both I think if this stone were cleaned the differentiation would be even more pronounced. It confused me and I was holding it..I'm trying to think of something almost everyone breathing in and out has seen to compare it to.
Ah, here is a good comparison, one side was about what a rolls razor hone feels like to the touch, and the other side was incrementally smoother. That was apart from the one slightly rougher zone on the lighter side which could have been mummified filth for all I know. Like I've seen a lot of oil tool hones that were two sided and they were usually more squared out rectangles and quite rough on both sides.
