barbers hones - do's and don'ts

hello,
I recently purchased a barbers hone lapped and ready to go. I have seen Glen's video, which makes it look so easy, but just wanted to see what the "Rookie errors" are that can occur on a barbers hone so I can try to avoid them!!

For instance, what would I have to do to wreck my blade/scratch it into oblivion. I have a cheap razor to practice strokes on, but would appreciate the heads up on things to avoid before trying it on one of my recently honed razors!

I usually tape it if I'm going to go more than ~10 passes.

thanks Hirlau, I had a read of them already - I guess its my fault for not being clear with questions! I wondered what the pitfalls were...as in, I realise that you could dull a blade by using it inappropriately, but what other issues are there? Might I scratch up gold washing on the face, for instance?

it's no different than using any other hone with the exception many just hold it in their hand because of the size. Gold wash on the blade should not be coming in contact with the hone however wash on the spine will so if you have an ornate spine you should tape it the same as with any other hone.
