Mercilessly Ridiculed

I confess, I was impaired, had a tooth extracted and .....well, I probably shouldn't go further with that. So in the last 4 minutes of a auction I see this stone which I convince myself is a natural stone, not a synthetic. One of our fellow members openly ridiculed me and suggested I stay away from Ebay (this is the 3rd purchase that has been questionable so he has a point). I guess now I wonder just what this 'oilstone' is. It does not look like the carborundum of old, but I have not looked at oil stones in a long long time.Attachment 142183

To me it looks like a barbers hone, i dont think its a natural.

161115226915 That is the auction number...it is huge if it is a barbers hone. I'm sure you are right, it is not a natural stone but on my monitor it seemed to have flecks of another color in the stone...that is what snagged me.

With only the info and pics supplied my guess is a Surgical Black Arkansas, in hand I might change that :p

Don't think it is a barber hone: 1 inch hight is not typical for barber hones. @Glen: isn't it too greenish-brown for a surgical black?

What mean kimosabe? The density of the hone could give you more information?

Probably, High Quality Arkies are pretty dense, sorta like my head, full of rocks and pretty dense :p at least that is what my wife tells me often enough :D

Plus the Slurry the Smell and how steel feels moving across it all these are clues

Truthfully, it was a poorly thought out purchase, thinking back now, there was a half crazed half in the bag limited informed guy sitting in the dark staring at a screen and hoping to turn lead into gold.

There are many hones of many types that have no common naming solution. I have a few with a permanent squeaky pen notation on the end as to what grit they are.
The only test is a razor with a known grit finish. If the razor improves, then it is a good hone..if the razor gets worse, then it is added at an earlier point in the sequence. If it chips the razor, then is the time to make a brick outhouse.

Good luck, In my poor eyesight it looks fairly smooth at least 6K or better.

Looked at the listing. I have an Escher of those dimensions so try the stone out. I also have a couple of unknowns that size from England...I think. I bought a selection at a sale of a English emigrant's antiques.
If Brown it could be a Silkstone or a Vois****.. from France.

Pic is straight off the Bay. I don't have the stone yet.

Well, when you get it, get some good pics out in the sunlight. With slurry, wet and dry.
Some of these guys are really good at ID'ing those. Trade ya for an India stone! ;)

Seriously. Don't end the thread upon buying something without experience. It could be your lucky day. The thickness of this intrigues me, as Kees posted one inch, but I cannot see the thickness mentioned otherwise? I suppose It was in the listing which I did not look at! We have all seen old natural stones cut and finished with precision.

Believe me I wish no bad luck to our hero here. My logic is simple . If I buy a prime rib dinner I will be damn sure I will eat prime rib. This was a 70 crap shoot on a rock that has no id. Could it be the rock of all rock? Sure. It just wouldnt be a gamble that I would play. With the same dough you could get a rock that you know 100% its grit and capabilities.

Like Kees pointed out its way to thick for a barbers hone, the pics looks brown to me, and Glen see it black. The auction description Vintage black oilstone! There still hope! But next time you want to drop that kind of dough you could invite me and Darl for prime rib!


Next time you look at a stone and your not sure, pm somebody there a lot of guys here with great knowledge of stones.

Everything bad is good for something. Everybody who has balls to stand up time from time takes risks and obviously sometimes looses. It is part of the game.
As for what your hone is better pictures and description is required. As it was so fa described black and on my laptop it looks black I would hope for black surgical arkie or slate type hone. I bet that would grind smile on your face straight away.

The guys whom dare to take a crap shot at an unknown hone are the heroes in this game.
If it turns out to be a good hone it will stay around as a good hone for razors, knives or tools.
If nobody buys them they may end up as landfill.
To play on the safe side and only buy known hones and pay them in full is to me boring.

You win some, you lose some but it sure is fun!

Considering the colour and the perfect cut shape I would expect it to be a surgical black arkansas as well.

I'm still thinking synthetic, however I can't pass up the thought it could be an Arkansas stone...but not a black. I do strongly feel that it is an American stone simply due to the measurements. I looked at the pics on the bay and they are pretty good. I have no doubt that it could be a polisher (6-8K)...but a finisher I am not sure about. I hope it's a miracle hone for you and you produce super edges off it no matter what it ends up being...
