What to do with prep stones?

I've now got a Chosera 1k and a Gokumyo 20 both of which came w prep stones. What are they for? The Gokumyo came w detailed instructions, unfortunately in Japanese. Has anyone translated them? The prep stone is 1 and 3k.

They are too small for flattening. I don't think they are intended to make slurry. Maybe just bring new grit to the surface? Maybe clear swarf? Maybe paperweights?

Best use i have found for those stones are to fix up the sides of Japanese kitchen knives.

I have one for every Chosera I own,, They look cool stacked in the Cabinet :p

You have to realize that these hones are not made for us (SR people) they are made for Knives and Tools, those prep stones would come into use with the different styles of honing that those use...
We just don't use the hones the same way..


That said they could be used for refreshing the surface, but I would be hesitant because of grit contamination possibilities, it would really not make me happy to be using a Chosera 10k and then run over a 400 grit particle left behind from refreshing the hone surface :banghead:

I'd like to learn how to sharpen knives as well, so how would I use the Chosera with the brown prep stone to do that?

I have one of those brown Naniwa nagura/prep stones - I use it for cleaning swarf off my superstones.

Most of us would not use the same stone for both razors and other knives.

See here is where I depart the norm :)

Unlike many "Knife & Tool Experts" who love to claim that, "Steel is Steel, Hones are Hones, and Sharp is Sharp, I have honed knives/tools my whole life can't see razors being any different"

My answer is:
I have no clue, I just recently learned how to sharpen a knife consistently, and to me if it slices Tomatoes good, I am good with it, I would never have the audacity to try and explain how to do something that I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert at...

If you are going to use the stone for razors and knife I belive its better to use SP or a dimond plate to clean the stones, important that they are flatt for razor use.
As for learning to sharpen knives you have youtube:) Personaly I like japanese style, korin knives have videos a video series. Also carter cultlery has a twist to the japanese honing.
Then you need to practise alot;)
