Nanocloth mold

Hi,

I recently started to use nanocloth and CBN sprays. I have sharpened my razors twice now and wanted to give it another go the other day when I discovered all my nanocloths to be covered with mold (Yikes!). I package the nanocloth separately to prevent contamination but they must been too wet when I put them back in the Ziploc bag (I sprayed distilled water on them before I start sharpening).

Did anyone have had the same experience ? I am wondering if the nanocloths are useless now or not even though I cleaned them up as much as I could.

I never wrap my nano/cbn combo. Never seen mold. I guess that's your problem right there. It probably needs to breathe and by enclosing it into a ziploc bag you're not helping. Hence the mold. I use a large drawer to store my honing tools.

It is a synthetic fiber, so I don't think you can damage them by cleaning unless you loosen the glue. I spray mine with a mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol when I use them. I also store mine in plastic bags, but usually leave them overnight to dry.

I totally did not not double check the cloths whether they were dry before I put them in the bag. They are dry now, but you can clearly see the stains of the mold even after they have been cleaned. We'll see how this goes but I am definitely going to use isopropyl alcohol as well, makes sense.

While I have never used Ken’s Nano Cloth bench strops, I have used Nano cloth, paper and other fabric materials as bench and hanging strops for CBN and you must let them dry completely. Try storing in a paper bag in a well-ventilated area, I leave mine out, covered until dry.

I don’t think you will hurt it by washing with liquid soap and water. Rinse and dry well.
