I only made mine partially wet :p....both sides appear a little different when wet. Speckled grey with reddish orange mostly dark grey (I'm bad with colors) Any of you attaching the sticker? and if you are are you sealing it with something.

I thought about it Trimmy,,,there is a thread here that talks about the application of the sticker in different ways, will try to find it. I'm not sure I will apply mine though,,,I thought about a custom box & applying one of the stickers to it.
Then tonight I bought a small Pelican box for it & will have photos soon.
Hey Trimmy,,,,see that oil slick on your Zulu?? That's Hawaiian Tropic,,,:rofl2:
Trimmy, here is one thread that has some ideas;

Here's the Pelican box I put it in for the time being. It fits like a glove, 8x3 stone with slurry. I put a little foam on the bottom & top. I will have a fancy wood box made someday.

I see there is a page 9 but it won't open. trying a post to see if I can break in. :<00
Your in 10pups,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:D
Here's one I did with a shorter Zulu- the sticker seems to be ok but I think the trick was to put it in before I put the finish on the wood. Of course that all depends on how you're finishing it...
Forgive the poor picture.

That's a beauty,,,tomorrow I'll PM you on it & discuss the box.
So I finally had the chance tonight to give the Zulu a whirl. I took two Hess 44's and did 100 laps on the Zulu sans slurry, and 100 laps on the Coti, sans slurry. I had 1 day of stubble and decided I'd do one side with the coti edge and well I ended up needing to use crox and much better as usual.
On to the other side with the Zulu, better then the coti but still needed to use the crox. I'm sure with a little fiddling and some more reading here this edge would probably work all by itself.
I did take my DMT to the Zulu and Micheal did a great job lapping. Drew some grids, 5-10 swipes with the DMT and all the lines were gone - it wasn't even needed.
I want a zg :-(
I finished my Swedish 4/8 (yeah you read it right) with 30 slurried laps on the ZG tonight. I don't know how much it help the 8k edge (as I didn't test it there), but damned if it isn't a great edge now. No pastes and i can't keep my fingers offa my face! ;)
Who is a good supplier of these stones? Might have missed it but I would love to give one a whirl, all I have ever used is natural stones.

Zulu Grey
Awesome thanks! Gonna have to pick up a big one, decent pricing too.
it is a natural tc
Very nice pictures you have posted :) I see that it's about time that I got my Zulu a box, just wondering where I could find something suitable...
I see that the stones you have showed here are much darker than mine. Except for maybe RoyalCake's.
Here is a picture of mine:

They are darker because they are wet,,,when dry, my Zulu looks just like yours.
I know water makes them look darker but since Trimmy72 made his partially wet I thought the dry parts would be an accurate comparison, and to me those look darker than mine. I thought that your picture with the box was dry as well, and to me that looks darker than mine. But you might be right and I might be fooling myself. Pictures are not always completely accurate, as well as my vision.
Mine stone looks like yours right now,,,when I take a photo, I open & edit it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager,, then I hit the "Auto Correct' button,,this usually darkens the color of whatever I took a picture of.
I just wish the Auto Correct button would add hair & subtract weight from my own pictures,,,
Aha, that is the reason, or at least one of the reasons, for the differences in color. I understand now how they are not so different. And since we are talking naturals you can always expect differences.
Haha wouldn't that be something? I guess you can't expect too much from the program.
ZG or a Shapton 16K? One wonders. I'm intrigued, but.... think I'd go with the shapton.
Video evidence show me it's beginner friendly for such as myself.
-one who only has a King 1K, 3/8K SS combo, 12K
That is something you have to feel yourself. It is generally recommended for beginners to go synthetic since they are more consistent and it's easier to receive guidance since all hones are pretty much the same.
The first hone I bought was a ZG so I didn't do as I said above, and this far I am not disappointed.
Me of not-long-tooth says, for whatever it is worth, that new honers should get fake rocks to 12-16k and get absolutely CONFIDENT with them before trying any natural stones.
Just sayin'.
(but don't ever pass up a deal on a coti  AND of course i have (and am shaving off) my ZG, but hey like it was on sale and evvverything!)
That is pretty likely. They aren't very different after all it seems.
Exactly my thought, how could I pass it up?
That might not be a bad idea, however I don't like the idea of doing a more or less permanent modification like that to mine. I'm just afraid of regretting it.
A silicone wouldnt penetrate very deep and should hold it to the wood wouldnt it?
I hate to bring back an old thread, but thought I'd put a little update since I started this about a year ago now. After all this time, I finally affixed the label to the back of my Zulu that I wanted to do many months ago. Ended up spraying a couple coats of matte Krylon on the back, stuck the sticker, then a few more coats over the top. Turned out nice.

As far as using the stone though, I still don't feel like I've made a lot of progress. Since getting into honing about a year ago with a Zulu and a coticule, I feel that I've progressed fairly well with the cot. I've been able to maintain my 8 razors with that over the past year without needing to send out for a honing! My edges aren't nearly as good as when I sent them out, but they're fairly comfortable and give a good quality shave.
As far as the Zulu goes, sometimes I'll stop a razor with the coticule, and other times I'll break out the Zulu to finish on that. With all the times I've used it (maybe a dozen or a bit more), I still don't see where it has made any bit of difference. I've tried water only, light slurry, thicker slurry, etc. But in all the times, I can't really seem to notice any difference than if I just shaved straight from the coticule. Not sure where my problem lies with this mysterious stone named Zulu Grey...
I'm not giving up on it though, I'll keep trying it out and hoping for some sort of change, but after a year, it's been mostly frustration... any ideas on what I may/may not be doing wrong with the Zulu?
I like the label & thanks for the way you attached it. I might try it, as I have 2 labels.
I have never slurried the Zulu, no need to. It's a high stroke finisher. I have gotten different results from different steel. This may be part of your situation. Light wet surface, razor weight only, high stroke count 60+
Sometimes she likes to be chased,,, she's high maintenance AFAIC.
Idk what to say about that. But I use mine as a finisher after my naniwa 12k and it stays as sharp and maybe even a touch sharper. IMHO it improves it by making it more face friendly, kind of like crox does . I tried crox tonight after using the zulu tonight. Gonna be a couple days before I can try that blade out as I just shaved this am. I use water only on mine and sometimes a drop of dawn dish soap.
@ wxman - I haven't attached my label, but that looks good.
As far as progress on the ZG -
I've used this setup
I use the 12k Naniwa then the ZG with Dawn dish soap at about 100 strokes, cRox 15 strokes - I just started using Dawn and I like the feel while honing, can't say if it's improved anything to any great extent, but it's better than coming off the 12k Naniwa as I think that produces a very keen but harsh edge...and the bevel is highly polished
Technically I think you should be able to go from the Coti to the ZG just may take a bit more work?
I have always jumped from an 8K , straight to the finisher. Nothing between an 8k & the finisher. I don't use pastes, so the finisher is the last stone,, then the strop.
I'm trying to stay away from the crox myself but with this particular razor I killed the edge trying to use a new stone and since this is a new razor supposedly shave ready i wanted this as keen as possible until it gets to dragging then I will just touch it up with the zulu and forgo the paste.
If you are using tape on the spine always put on a fresh piece. YMMV
Dave
Thanks for the advice. I've always used tape with mine when doing them, and yes, always add fresh tape when moving over to the Zulu. I had read that it would take many laps and with my razors, I've tried everywhere from 50 up to about 200...though again, nothing that I could notice being different from the coticule edge. I have a varied set of razors, mostly German steel, a couple Sheffield, and a couple unknown... so there's a good variety of razors I've tried out with it.
I've got a Ralf Aust that I will be trying on it later today... it's fresh off the cot, and I'm planning to go to the Zulu water only. Hopefully this time some magic happens.
Ended up not doing the Ralf Aust today, but a basic Dovo Best Quality instead. It had been pulling quite a bit lately and I avoided using it, so I figured I'd give it a run through.
First dulled it lightly on a glass, then used the Unicom method on the coticule (minus the taping), then proceeded to the Zulu. Prior to going to the Zulu, I looked at it under magnification and found it had a very nice edge from the coticule.
Once over to the Zulu, I went ahead with water only for who knows how many laps... lost count around 75. I'm guessing somewhere right around 150'ish before finishing up. Gave it a nice stropping and I'll give it a shot in the morning. Here's hoping to a great shave!
