Newby question: From what I've seen most people when they're honing use a Norton 4000/8000 then finish on a 10k or 12k stone. I was wondering though would it work to go from a 6000 to a 10k or a 12k? It seems to me that if you need to remove steel a 6k would be faster and if you're polishing a 10k or 12k wouldn't be that much slower. Or am I wrong?
It will work, but going from 6K to 10 or 12K is a very huge step, and nothing I would recommend.
Basically after the bevel is set the aim is not to remove metal fast, but to refine the edge to the sharpest and smoothest possible by graually remove the scratches from the previous stone.
A 6K stone leaves much deeper scratches than a 8K, so the amount of additional effort to remove those scratches on a 12K would be significant.

Thanks for the replies. The thread about the one stone honing was really interesting. I'm just getting honing my own razors so I'm trying to figure out what stones I need.
On that note has anyone used the Taidea 3k/8k. They're much cheaper than the Norton 4k/3ks but do they give up a lot of quality?

I have a Taidea 3K...it's okay, but for a bit more I would get the Naniwa combo stone instead. Better consistency and feedback in the Naniwas, and it's only peanuts more.

I use a diamond hone to start.
The Taidea are very soft and not as good as the naniwas. I used it at the start but used something else to finish on. Since I got the naniwas it only gets used on knives.
Strange, my taidea is a lot harder than my naniwa....at any rate the naniwas are best for the slight price bump, no point in "upgrading" later, you'd just be needlessly paying for hones twice.Quote:

6k king ... Kinda like a one stone honing technic! Very thick slury, medium slurry and just water... At this moment it will shave hair from my legs without touching my skin
12k Chinese... Very thick slurry... Circles and x... Medium slurry and just water! So yes it is possible ... The very thick slurry helps with the gap between grit... This me... I havent been honing for a long time but i have a 8 razors in my rotation that i have restored and all can pass the hanging hair test

I ended up getting a taidea 3/8. They were on sale for $30. I couldn't say no. They appear to work just fine - I get a perfectly functional edge off them and am still totally a novice.
They are somewhat soft and need to be relapped quite a bit. But, I'm just doing my own razors and actually kind of like the lapping process; it's a strangely zen sort of thing. So they seem to work for me. I don't find myself regretting the choice. I can understand how a pro would find then annoying. If I was doing ten or twenty razors a day the need to constantly relap would be insufferable.

I soak mine for the recommended five minutes. That seems to be enough. When I'm honing I dribble water on them with my hand every 20 laps or so.

It's just not recommended for beginners, mainly because it's used when it isn't needed. The reason being, bread knifing is used in restorations, not honing, and should only really be used to remove large chips, heavy damage, etc.Quote:

P.S. gs, I need to thank you for your videos. I used them to go from never honed anything but pocket knives to getting a really comfortable shaving edge on all my razors in a week and a half. I have tons to learn still but I feel confident that I will have no problem refreshing and repairing my razors now unless I do something completely stupid to one of them.
