I use the Naniwa 12K and I think it is great. it is a synthetic so they are pretty consistent so one nani will hone like another nani as opposed to naturals where they are all a bit different

i cant compair it to anything but the naniwa 12k has worked flawlessly for me so far. and it was pretty cheap in comparison to the natural stones. and being synthetic is specificly designed to be the best posible thing to sharpen metal on as apposed to a natural stone that just my chance happens to be able to sharpen.
Thank you to Robert and Glen. Now I'm inspired to stick it out and figure out how to get a good comfortable shave off the norton 1k 4k/8k and my paddle strop without paste. So to satisfy my purchasing desire I picked up a lighted jewelers loop, a DMT lapping plate, a slurry stone, and a 10 pen display case for my razors  All for the same price as the Naniwa I was eyeballing!! Please pray for my faces well being over the next few weeks...
There ya go Matt, :) just take your time and work through it you will be fine...
One thing I have noticed in all these years on SRP and at all the Meets the people that take their time, enjoy the journey and don't try and rush to get to the "End" tend to get the most out of this hobby :)
I made the mistake of getting too much equipment before mastering what I already had. It really slowed my progress. If I had it to do over again I would stick to my Nortons until I couldn't get anymore out of them before I got a "finisher". I still test shave after the 8k to make sure it is "shave ready" before moving up. Want to make sure I am not just polishing a turd!
Enough of my rambling!
You have a finisher. LeRn that like nobody's business. You can refine it with some pastes and stuff if you like.
You've only been at this 9mos. You don't know what you don't know yet.
But...naniwa 12k.
Is there anything else?
I just bought the Naniwa 12K for a nice price @ Japanese "Super-Stones" by Naniwa
Company is a brick and mortar shop so I took a chance! Abrams suggests this as a "refresher stone" in his video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
indeed, keep at it using what you've got I recently ran into some trouble with a blade as well, dulled the blade and reset the bevel, got it to armhair shaving, but barely and didn't improve moving upward :banghead:, almost blamed the blade itself  luckely somewhere around here I read the tip to use a magic marker to evaluate if the bevel was actually set, 1 side yes, the other side, not by a long shot, fixed it and got a real nice shave of it last week :D
