I am a rock climber and spent a lot of time in Rumney NH. The rock in Rumney is schist which I believe is a good hone type stone? There is even an area where garnets are just there on the rock. Has anyone ever tried some stones from here? What should I look for when grabbing a stone next time?
Probably not a good material for honing on.
Is schist not a good medium then for hones?
Do it!! Actually do it twice and drop one off at my house in Clinton :lol: I personally think its worth a shot...but I know nothing about geology or what makes the good stones good. But what the heck, run a junky razor over it and see what happens. I have a nice wide 6/8 or so razor with a nice long crack running up the blade that would be a good test subject :)

As a somewhat rock hound myself I say do it, dunno where galaxy got his info maybe he has experience with the stone there?

Hard to say if it would be useful for a hone without further investigation.
Schist is a universe onto itself. The composition and characteristics can vary tremendously. Some are so friable they would probably destroy a razor and some are very fine grained and solidly part of the rock (I'm talking the mica in the rock).
Well next climbing trip I'll bring some home from all over the mountain. Big questions is how I'll end up cutting to size with my current tools.
Can buy a tile/wet saw for 50 bucks at lowes I believe
Where can a buy a new swmbo? Cause I think by buying another tool I'll lose the one I got.

The cheapest option is a tungsten carbide hack saw blade. You should be able to get a 12" one for very cheap. The cutting will be slow tho.
The other option is to either buy a small wetsaw, or angle grinder. Both will do the job. The wetsaw is easier, but the grinder will let you cut deeper.
Here in the UK a 4 1/2 inch grinder and a 3" wetsaw are about the same price. Remember you will need a mask, eye protection, and probably ear protection as well.
Work outside. Even if you have a garage. The dust you will make in 10 minutes will take months to clean up inside. Outside it just vanishes!
The angle grinder is my personal weapon of choice, It's nimble, takes multiple disc types and can be used for a lot of other tasks like cutting metal, grinding metal/stone, sanding, chasing mortar out for pointing, making small fires in un-noticed lumps of wood, And threatening small children.
Well I guess angle grinder may be the only option. Thank goodness cause those kids have been looking too smug on their training wheels. I will for sure log where I grab the stones but it's gonna stink lugging them out. The area with garnets is at the top of the mountain.
rent a wet saw for the weekend
