Picked a couple of hones up at the flea market. At a buck a pop I figured I couldn't lose. Anyone have any ideas if they are a boon or a bust?Attachment 164246Attachment 164247Attachment 164248
Here is the second one

Yeah the backside is toast they broke it off and glued it back on. Only the coticule side is usable Attachment 164256Attachment 164257
All cleaned mostly. By the way does thuringian slurry look grey on your fingers but more whitish on the stone?

Nice Coti!! The other might be also interesting post some further pictures lapped, with slurry, etc...might be a Thuri candidate....
Any sawmarks visible ?

Here are pics of the possible thuringian. Most notable is left over adhesive on the ends.Attachment 164269Attachment 164270Attachment 164271Attachment 164272

Def has some saw marks. Lapping with a coarse dmt. Thanks guys for the help I've been on a long hunt for a cheap thuringian cause Eschers are insanely expensive
There is a huge gouge missing in the bbw and the lapping would almost ruin the stone going that deep

Glue on both ends doesnt rule out...label was often glued over the working surface and around both ends but iam not shure...
But the size seems uncommon i think

Yeah there are saw marks under the glue. It's blue grey dry and greenish when wet. Sorry we don't have any sun today it's gloomy out. Perhaps Tom.
That's a great idea with the ca and slurry dust. Btw I put that slurry in there attempting to lap the stone. Should I just fill with ca then a layer of slurry/stone dust then lap once it cures?

Alright fellas I keep coming back for more. I'm sorry but y'all are a wealth of information. I lapped the more difficult side of the possible thuringian and found some interesting things;
Attachment 165232 dry with inclusions
Attachment 165233 dry close up inclusions/ strata change?
Attachment 165234 wet inclusions and strata color change
Attachment 165235 overall wet. That round dot is just light not something on the hone.
Any thoughts guys. Based on the adhesive on the ends, the near perfect match in size and coloring; could this be a barbers delight escher or something similar? Thank you again guys for all your time and opinions!

Mhh...i also do not really tend that this is thuringian...not ruling it completely out...
The guess us just a nice fine kind if schist where a mass of these are around in all variations...another pic of one i own which has some pyrite inclusions and a comparable structure to these points you showed...no strata change on this one...i also thought this might be a thuringian but it is not...

Well I ran my Tonsorial Gem through its paces tonight. My progression was Nani 1k, Norton 4/8, Nani 12k and finally the mystery with slurry diluting to water every 7-10 strokes. I am very happy with the results. I would argue whatever type of stone this is it gets the job done.
I would love to loan out some mystery stones at some point and get more expert opinions.
