apart barber hone
I just recently got one of these on ebay. It is in excellent condition, however it has a small chip on one of the sides on the front. My question is, will this hone work using the back side? I dont want to lap it since its in great condition, except for that chip, plus they very hard to lap.

Sure the back side will work as long as it is flat. FYI they are not hard to lap.

I am new to straight razor shaving, and i have yet to lap any types of stones, so i rather not risk it. I guess i will use the back side. Thank you.

does anyone know how to clean the hone from all the gunk on it? the box says emery paper, are there any more suggestions?
-
It you are just trying to get rid of accumulates gunk, then a toothbrush should work fine. Use either a bit of soap and water or some toothpaste. Anything past that is really just a form lapping. Follow the lapping recommendations you see pop up on the forums.

jmilo,
Can you post some pictures? I've discovered that not all the Apart hones have the headstamp. Love to see yours.
Personally, I'd lap it regardless of the chip. I want to know that the stone is absolutely flat.

Also, you'll probably want to go here and look at How to lap a Barber hone.
Very good guide to barber hones. I wore my arm off grid lapping up to the 2500 grit range. May have been excessive, but I found that the edge mine produced was a level up from my 12K stone.
Very nice BH, in my opinion.
