New hone acquisition

Antique Large Sharpening Whet Stone 10 1 2" Long | eBay

My dice roll seems to be paying off so far. Zero oil in the stone, feels incredibly fine. Soft, I was able to saw off the spar with a coping saw of all things and gained a slurry stone in the process. Working surface once I am done will be 8 15/16" X 1 13/16". I am going to refine this some more tonight and test it tomorrow to see where it takes a 10k level edge.

I didn't think of bidding on it cause the rusty colors to it.

I asked the lady selling it a lot of questions and she was incredibly helpful so I felt comfortable rolling the dice. She was true to her word though. Zero oil. I found more materials so I prepped the surface to a point acceptable to test a blade on. Used a solingen made blade that was rebranded for us distribution. Blade was brought up to a 10k level and then I made a slurry on this stone and went through a series of laps finally finishing on water. Very solid HHT 4 off the stone, Insane HHT 5 off the strop. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems like a steal of a deal as of right now. Feedback using this hone is incredibly progressive as you get tons of audio as well as tactile feedback when the edge is ready for another dilution or it has maxed out on water. I just need to test shave off of the rock to see how the edge characteristics are.

Nice looking stone, hard to tell what it is from the photos, one looks green the other grey. Most probably a fine slate, may be a finisher.

Put a razor to it and find out.

Thin your slurry to clear water with light pressure on a set bevel after at least a 4k or higher.

Great buy.

It drastically improved a 10k edge. If I had to guess this hone is over a 15k level.

it looks like a CNAT. Slurry and all. It looks like mine. Not saying it is but thats what it looks like. Still whatever it is for $21.75 not bad. I wonder if they quarried the CNATS back then and just didn't really market it that much. Or maybe her Grandfather was an explorer in China, who knows.

Yeah, not chat though, it is quite soft.

I just shaved off of it using an 8/8 FBU w&b. Whatever this thing is, the edge is extremely keen and super aggressive. Post shave strop the HHT hasn't let up at all either.
