question about hone
I also bought an antique hone thru e bay. It works great but I am cofused regarding the directions on the box and was hoping someone could explain it to me. The information on the box states that the dark side cuts fast and the white side is used for a delicate finish. My problem is that one side is dark or slate color while the other side is almost maroon. I am sure the box is original. Any suggestions?Attachment 174419

I think its just the wrong stone in the wrong packaging....
-
Is there an embossed makers stamp on it?
If there is it would be easier to come up with some specific information instead of generic information.
-
My opinion looks like the wrong box.
Sometimes I buy old stones that are very clearly the
wrong box or holder.
I got a Nice Coticule one that came in a corumbun razor hone box.

I really cannot say for sure whether that was the original box even though the size is exact.
I have a few of those unmarked hones in varied sizes. The best they have done for me is coarse side 600 at best and fine side 2-3K at best.
That may or may not be a good hone but use a steak knife to test it before bringing a razor near it.
YMMV

Rezdog there isn't any embossed info just the maker "Regal"
along with a large W on the box.

Thanks Geezer. I am just curious about it. I do use it for touch ups and it does a good job. But I do have Japanese water stones for serious honing
-
It is obviously the wrong box - unless the makers were colour blind and did not have a clue what colour their hone was!
As for the hone in the wrong box, you can only try it and compare the edges against known hones to ascertain where each side belongs in your honing regimen.
If the unknown hone has no markings on it, then sadly you will never know for sure its provenance.

It kind of looks like a skute hone. Is it soft and waxy feeling? And what are the dimensions?

Shaun's right. Sebastian too, most likely. The only thing I could offer is that it is a Barber's Hone. Was "Regal" on the box or hone? Just wondering...
There are a couple threads with "Regal" in them:

Then, of course, there is MODINE's test:

I haven't looked at them, but that should get you something, I hope.
