Couple days ago I got in the mail a very well preserved blue Shumate barber hone [smaller in size than average ] that is proving to be quite the toucher-upper stone. 6 to 8 strokes on this smallish stone has yielded a great shave from two Genco Wedges which are actually 1/4 hollows but the model name is "Wedge". Then 15 to 20 strokes on a Gokumyo 20K.
The blades on the two razors are very stiff and are easy to hone, at least for me. Shaves were remarkable........:chapeau
I wonder if it is similar in composition to the blue "Lakeside" BH?

Have you tried out the Keen Kutter yet?
I would think the gokumyo 20 would be the toucher upper ?
That is what I was wondering, how can you tell that the barbers hones shave so well when you put the 20K into the equation?Quote:

I am thinking that the barber hone is the toucher upper and the 20k is the polisher. Actually it doesn't matter what we think, it matters how it works. Just trying to put it into an acceptable perspective...........:shrug:

I've got one of those blue Shumate hones, and it's really sweet. Definitely improves the edge over the Swaty I have. It's my favorite.

From what I can tell it "rehydrates" some of the binding matrix. If you look up Modines BH lapping write up on R+S he mentions it there.
