    Default Electrical tape too gummy?

i recently acquired a touch up stone, and took it through the paces to refresh my very first straight - my "learner" straight, a Wm Elliot which is far from sexy, but has given me decent shaves.

I used a layer or regular black electrical tape to prevent additional hone wear before taking the blade to the stone. The stone worked great, my straight was definitely sharper with no pulling whatsoever. I was pleased. But it took some serious elbow grease to get the adhesive from the tale off the blade and spine.
I guess for this blade it's ok, but I have others with an etch, or gold wash - I wouldn't want to scrub like i did on those blades.

    Has anyone seen this?
    My questions are:
    • Is there a particular type/brand of tape to use on straights?
    • If they're all sticky, is there a recommended product/technique that will easily eliminate the gummy stuff? Acetone maybe?

    Thanks!

Tape Removes Tape,,,, use a fresh piece to dab off the residue stuck on the blade,,,,,it's like magic ,,,

I personally use 3m electrical tape, 700 (I think). It does leave residue on the spine sometimes. I use the same tape to stick and peel all the residue off. If I notice anything after, I use denatured alcohol to wipe the spine with, that usually takes care of anything left behind.

Hirlau and Double0757 beat me to it.

And if all else fails a little WD40 will substitute for denatured alcohol until you pick some up. (You are a guy and you have some WD40 someplace...right? it should be with your Duct Tape)

I use Ronson lighter fluid on a corner of a paper towel. Not that other methods won't also work, but I have it, and it works great, so that is what I use.

I use tape from Harbor Freight with no residue. They sell it in packs of ten rolls. Works for me.............

Ok. Yes I'm a guy, and yes I have WD40. Heck I even have denatured alcohol.
But for the life of me, I can't figure out why I didn't try using the tape to remove the tape.

Old tape and tape exposed to chemicals in the top/bottom of a tool box can get gummy. Buy a fresh roll for straights.
