I don't have a dedicated lapping stone at the mo', I just use a piece of square marble tile and wet'n'dry.
If I'm going to shell out for a Suehiro, I'll want a good lapping stone as well. Would you recommend the 325 ?
Thanks for your help mate, this is a very timely thread you started :D
The popular theory, is that the DMT is fine for lapping the Suehiro. I contacted Murray Carter a few weeks ago and he reckons you should keep diamonds away from waterstones. Murray has some different ideas, that most do not subscribe to, however I have an open mind on all things sharpening, so i at least listen before taking it on or dismissing it. On this, our forum, we may get a few different opinions, but, I have A dmt325 and I intend using it to flatten the Suehiro. I will however contact "tools from japan" and ask their opinion. The wet dry paper option will work, as we all start there, but the 20k is a dense hard stone and it may take a lot of paper, but in reality it's going to take a bloody long time to dish this thing out. You can get a DMT325 for about 60 bucks from Carbatec. Paper is about a dollar a sheet, so it will pay for itself fairly quickly

When I exchanged emails with the manufacturer (Tools from Japan), I was told they can't make them quick enough, being so popular. He said they usually keep 3 on hand, but some type of wait is expected. I ordered mine on the 27.9.14, so I imagine I'll have a couple more weeks of waiting. When yours arrives let us know.
Cheers Bob

Eddy, I contacted Stuart Tierney the owner of the store we ordered the stone from. He is packing them to be sent out tomorrow, so it won't be too long. Re the DMT325 to lap them. He said, they should be fine, but not brand new, they need to stabilise by flattening a dozen or so razors. It knocks down the protruding particles in the plate. He couldn't say 100%, but is fairly certain it's OK, so I'll be using my DMT325. Apparently, like many retailers, 'Tools from Japan" wait for their stock to arrive. His Suehiro order arrrived yesterday hence the delay, but a week or so should do it.

Bongo, the retailer at Tools from Japan gave a thumbs down for wet/dry paper. He said the density and hardness of this stone, make it to big a job for paper, so we should be fine with the DMT325.
