Ok so I found a barbers hone really cheap but it needed some work and a lot of lapping so ive been using it as a slurry stone on my 1k ice bear. It builds a great slurry and in turn also laps the barbers hone. My question is, can I use the barbers hone for a slurry stone on my natural chinese 12k?
If its doing the job, why not.
Well that was kind of my thought on it as well, I just didnt know if it could hurt the natural stone or not. Hopefully the natural stone would cut faster since it is sSSSSOOOOOO slow ha
I would say it all depends on the barbers hone. If it's a carborundum definitely go for it.

There are a few things in play. If the Barbers Hone is a lot more coarse than your 12K and it is leaving particles on the 12K it will lower the level of the finish. However is it is the same or higher or if the grit is friable then you are getting the best of both worlds. Truly the only way to know for sure is to experiment. The absolute worst case is that you will get a less than desirable shaving edge and have to work it back up. Take a walk on the wild side and blaze your own trail.
Not familiar with it. I am not the know it all of hones but as I understand it there are cold pressed and hot pressed. The hot pressed are not the same all the way through. In other words if you break through the surface you find something other than what was intended. The cold pressed are more like a grinding wheel. The same no matter how much they wear down.
Then there is the difference in grit. If for example your barber hone is 10 or 12 K then what are you gaining in slurry ? Not much at the 1k level.
A stone harder or as hard as the one you are trying to raise a slurry on is what you want. Otherwise your raising a slurry that is coming off the softer stone.

(that said, you can slurry the chinese hone, and it will cut pretty fast because the particles aren't really that small in them, at least not compared to the level of finish they're capable of).
I was having the same problem with one of my cotis. I then tried the same idea, I used my thuringian as a slurry stone on the cream side of my BBW with amazing good results. I cant explain it , it just works and really well I must add.
I theorize that by blending the harder slurry with the softer slow stone it becomes a hybrid of sorts. blend the best of both stones to achieve a 11-12K finisher.
The guys who know more and have been at it longer can say it much more clearer, because I really dont know how , I just know it does.
It seems to be working really well as a slurry stone for my ice bear 1k, a slow stone as well until a slurry forms. I have no need to try it on my nortons. I stopped using it on the 12k because it was obvious that the barbers hone is no where near as hard as the 12k.
