Wüsthof 3000/8000 whetstone query

Hello gentlemen,

I am looking to purchase a workhorse hone for myself to produce shave-ready edges and Norton 4k/8k is confirmed awesome. However they are not sold where i live but there is a Wüsthof 3k/8k for a lower price conveniently available.

Does anyone have experience honing with it? Will there be a noticable difference between the 8k norton and 8k wüsthof ? Anything you deem relevant information would be much appreciated as i am new to honing (and sr) and don't currently have any sharpening stones.

Just a couple of quick thoughts, even though I have not used one. The manufacture has a reputation for very high standards in knives, so it stands to reason that the hone would be quality.

Yes, the company operates in Solingen and they used to make straight razors back in the day aswell. I guess the right question to ask performance wise is how beginner friendly the hone is and perhaps tips on using the 3k/8k Wüsthof.

I do not doubt that Wusthof sells quality products. That said, if you are looking for a ceramic hone and they are available where you live consider the Naniwa Super Stone series of hones. Over here they are price competitive with if not cheaper than the Wusthof. You will also get more user feed back on the Naniwas as they are very popular and I have no heard of anyone using a Wusthof.

I have a Garibaldi razor made by Wusthof. Shaves great!

Looks like a ceramic waterstone. Call them and see if they will share important info, bond and abrasive type.

I am not sure if this is the same as the Henkels one but that one feels like resin. The 3k feels finer than my Norton 4k, and the 8k is also resin-ey if I recall.

I would get the Naniwa SS instead if possible, but I may be comparing against the wrong thing.

I bought a Bismarck from the fleamarket to practice honing on and got the Wüsthof 3k/8k for 60.48€. I have never honed a straight razor or used a fine hone. I watched a bunch of videos from Lynn and got good advice from H. from #srp irc chat. It came with a note suggesting the whetstone be submerged in water for 5-10 minutes before use and applying water when using it. I started setting the bevel on the 3k and then progressed to honing on the 3k/8k and did a fair bit of stropping. Very happy with the results, 4 days of beard flew right off. I was smiling all the way through shaving. It didn't pull hair or cause any discomfort.

Wüsthof 3k/8k does what i expected it to do. When considering this as a first hone it is definitely not money wasted. I am unable to compare it to anything but i might revisit the thread once i do and have.

Yes, I know where their blades are produced but I was wondering if someone else produces the hones for them and they just sell them under the Wusthoff label. Getting one of their vintage straights is on my to do list.

hi there, just wondering if you're singing the wusthof 3k/8k praises? i'm currently waiting for one to arrive but just read that the grit grade is on the japanese scale which equates to the european standard of 1000/2000 grit. i'm beginning to feel nervous about the finishing capability of this stone. what dya reckon?

I have a 300/1k stone and the wüsthof 3k/8k much much finer... I recommend using chromium oxide after the 8k and you'll have what you need for a very nice shave. My experience with the stone is very positive, although there might be other stones that are better the wüsthof does what i expect it to. Report back with what you get :) good luck

Thank you vm Mr F, that's cheered me up. the wusthof's being shipped today, i'm expecting a packet of chrox tomorrow and i'm about to finish my homemade balsa strop to receive it. almost all set. will definitely let you know my results.

0k I'm rather pleased now, the wusthof 3/8k is a very good stone and cuts surprisingly fast. it arrived this morning and i had a good go on it this arvo. i went from 3k to 8k to leather to shave very quickly. my blade could do with a bit of extra polishing but the balsa chrox strop i made is still drying so i'll report back with those results next time. it took no time at all to set a decent bevel on the 3k and it cut very quickly on the 8k to remove any jags. like i say there's room to improve but after a fairly limited strop i had a pretty comfortable shave. in fact my best straight shave yet by far but i'm still pretty new to the game. all the practice is starting to pay off and it's very satisfying. all i need now is a job lot of vintage blades to work on when i get the cash. have a great weekend.:o

Great news. Post back on after the cr0x. I was looking at a wusthof but went with a Taidea instead due to the $60 price difference .

Wo! i hadn't seen the Taidea until now…amazon have it and its a good bit cheaper. looks like a good stone too. it pays to shop around eh? oh well, lets hope i'm still happy with the wusthof at the end of the month…when i'm broke!:shrug:

You should be happy my Taidea is so-so I haven't really put the time into learning it

Yeah maybe…a bit of time is a key to all this biz. a crappy blade to practise on also….where ever you get one of those from??
