So I received my cretan today and I went straight to dry 50 grit sandpaper to flatten it. Well guess what, this @@@@ rock won't lapp.....

I spent almost 2 hours on good quality 50 and 80 grit sandpaper and it removed the pencil lines but I am sure that the stone is not perfectly flat. Also let's not talk about slurry bevause there is none, either with a dmt 600 card or its matching slurry stone.

I am getting really frustrated and want to throw the stone out of my window....

Might this be a finisher variety of the cretan?

Here is a photo of the hone (dry).

As far as I know: the darker the cretan stone the denser and finer it is. Whitish hones are clamed to be coarser and softer.

So I guess you have a hice finisher type.

Before it flies through your window, please let me know, I am looking for a dark variant of cretan hone

First time in my life I was looking for a coarser natural hone and it ended up being a finisher...

If I find no use for it I will let you know Philipp.

I have a home I couldn't lap with sandpaper. Even the zirconia variant. But sillicon carbide lapping grit did the trick. Maybe because I was so close to the objective, maybe because that powder is magic, I don't know.

I thought about using SIC but it is pretty hard to find some here in Greece.

These hones, even the coarse ones, tend to be quite hard.

Nice stones though, I've managed to go from bevel setting to getting an acceptable shave out of mine. Not great, mind you, but it shaved comfortably enough. I considered that edge about halfway done according to my standards.

    Apparently/allegedly the Cretan's slurry breaks/wears down.

Hi Iasonas, how coarse of a natural stone are you looking for? In my experience Cretans aren't really coarse, they are just quick when softer (whiter)... still, even the coarsest ones fall in the mid-range for razors IMO.

Quite right. As it is here in Serbia. I ordered it from Germany, here:

    Dieter Schmid Werkzeuge GmbH
    Wilhelm-von-Siemens-Str. 23
    12277 Berlin
    Germany

    www.utensiliprofessionali.com
    verkauf@feinewerkzeuge.de

150g of 60-grit SiC cost me about 15 EUR delivered, which is very reasonable and can probably lap 20 stones (YMMV).

What SIC grit would you recommend for the cretan?
