MIsterious hone
Hello everybody, first of all i apologize for my english :-)
I own a beautiful stone coming from U.K., and i would like to try to give a name to it. The seller believes it's a charnley forest, someone more expert than me told that it could be a Llyn Idwal.
Anyway, the surface showed thin scratches and some chipping. Lapping it was not easy, the stone formed a significant quantity of light green slurry, quite sticky; in fact, I felt it to be eroded very little, and it took a couple of hours to straighten it, starting with a 120-grit sand paper, going up until 1000.
Here are some pictures of the stone.
Thank you in advance for every opinion
The surface appears very smooth to the touch and the water tends to slip away. Attachment 201111Attachment 201112Attachment 201113Attachment 201114Attachment 201115Attachment 201116

Nice stone ;-) could be either of those two, i just believe a bit more that it might be a Charnley, however there are a lot of hones around...
Here is one from Bushdoctor, he wrote its a Llyn Idwall...

Yes, it's me! :-)
It could be interesting to compare side by side this stone with another one whose identity is certain, just to satisfy my "thirst for knowledge" :-). Anyway, I have made a test on a Sheffield that i had previously honed on a cuticole and the feeling has been very good.
I will keep testing my rock :-)

I am going nore towards CF. Are there any chips?
-
Yes, there were a few chips on the borders, and two shallow nicks (i'm not sure this is the right term.....) near the center of the hone.
-
I have one of these, never could decide what it was.
It was sold as a CF but there are sections that look more like a grecian oilstone, which we know to be a type of LI.
Mine appears to be harder than most CFs and gives a more 'crisp', slightly harsher edge than a CF, so I amleaning a bit towards LI.
I did notice that these stones began to appear in quantity when A-J started selling hones some years back...
Regards,
Neil
