I paid 8 dollars for this. Does anyone actually use one? If so, how do you use it. I am active duty so space is always a premium. If I could take this while traveling it would be nice because of size.

It works fine, but it is my least favorite of the low 100 series Carborundums. Unlike the rest of them, the 106 is porous. Wet this one and the water quickly soaks in and the surface dries. You can use it like any other barber hone but I think this one does work better with lather because of its porosity. When you notice any reduction in the quality of the shave, lather up the hone, do 4-6 light honing strokes, wipe the blade off, strop, and shave.
Because the hone is porous, you should let it dry at least a full day before returning it to its box.

Lesson here is for anyone who may have a barber hone, I strongly suggest you set aside a razor or two just for the barber hone. Maintaining a razor with nothing but a barber hone for a year or two is a great way to really understand what old school shaving was like.
I think I am going to do exactly what you said. Maintain 2 razors or so with just the 106 and then use the 12 on everything else. Now that you gave me the run down I will give it a shot.
