The recommendation is to soak it 5 to 10 minutes, and no more than 15. The thread you linked has some of the most discussion I've seen on this forum, regarding this particular stone. If you are only honing razors on this stone, and not at a rate of the guys that hone regularly/for money/for a lot of other people, I doubt this stone will disappear quickly on you.
Caveat: I'm not yet experienced in honing, so please take my advice on this with a huge grain of salt. That being said, I bet this stone will last us both a while.
