Thread: If someone asked you to put a starters kit!!!

If someone asked you to put a comprehensive starters stones kit (daimond plate, bevel setter, prefinisher, and finisher)

What you will suggest based on your experience, stones that you owned and honed with, of course the cheaper the better since it's a starters kit.

The other day while sorting through my stones, I thought what if someone asked that question because he isn't interested in buying over 70 stone or so...

I know that there is lots of posts talking about the same subject, but here I would like you to mention whatever you think is good based on your experience for a starter not what everybody else says...

I would choose:

Atoma 400, cost 70$
King 1k/6k, cost 35$
Koppa Ozuku Asagi 5+, cost 70$

175 - 200 $ is a very reasonable cost for a starters kit in my opinion, also the stones aren't too difficult to use and the natural finisher is always a plus.

I would say DMT 2x6 plate is abbout 40 bucs
Suehiro 1k 3K , biggest size ,it is 34 bucs shiped ,
a Taidea 8K - 21 bucs shiped and a
C12 K for finisher as the bigest size is 36 bucs shiped
120 is the final score for a Hard as rock eficiency on every blade ine try to hone .

Hmmm. I'll skip the diamond plate and just use glas and water sand paper grit 250 and 400 for lapping.

Then the Naniwa Super Stones 1, 3, 8 and 12K

That's a great starter kit and really you will never need anything else.

Or you could drop the 12K and go for a coticule.

I think I would save up and buy a DMT 325, good for more than lapping hones like reshaping heels and stabilizers, Naniwa 1K,3K,8K and 12K hones. Never felt a huge need for anything else so far.

Agree with above, except:
You could keep the 12K and get a Gokumyo 20K and never EVER want anything else.
(Except maybe a Chosera 1K)

Naniwa 1k

Either a Coti or a Bavarian Boutstone

Around 100€-140€ depending on Size

I would do a;
DMT 1200 (it will set a bevel & lap & clean the other stones)
Combo Norton 4/8
and a PHIG

Barbers hone or a ck12 ( just maintain the razor) , 6/8 Ralf Aust, custom shaving brush, 2 or 2 1/2" strop, shave soap, witch hazel and Alum block .

I like were this is going, till now there is one mentioning only for Norton 4k/8k, don't get me wrong it is a great stone but that is what I was aiming to... Lots of us after a while of honing find a better alternatives for a starters kit rather than what everybody else believe.

Interesting choices here, I always fancy the Natural Stones over any manmade stuff especially for finishing...

Sebastian a Coticlule or a Bavarian are very nice stones but I think the learning curve associated with those might make it a bit difficult for a new honer to get the feel an necessary skills to use them as a prefinishers and finishers IMO.

Yeah agreed, but the curve wouldnt be much more difficult in the case when someone is starting as a beginner with a coticule....

And clear is that synthethic stones might be the easier choice!!
