Thread: What's one type of stone you have no interest in?

I know this honing thing we like is a very YMMV thing. I am curious as to what type of stone you have no interest in and why.

I'll start things off. I have never used a Japanese Natural and don't plan on ever acquiring one. There are way too many variations out there and I don't feel comfortable picking one with the chance that it's good for the money the bring I want a good one. Other then that I really have no interest in them..

Well, I just sold my last coticule (deep rock) a couple of days ago.

I won't say I don't have interest in them, period, because they sure are pretty. But I've never gotten the same kind of giddy up out of them that I can get out of much less expensive stones.

(if I ever see one for cheap at a flea market, i'll still buy it, anyway).

I have been there Dave, got rid of all mine. Then one caught my eye and I had to get it. Which type do you prefer? Arkansas?

In the hypothetical scenario that I'm buying a single stone, I'd like a good black arkansas or translucent. The good retailers of those have stones that are extremely consistent from one to another (for example, there is practically zero risk in buying a trans or black from dan's whetstone).

I do have a lot of jnats, and the first one that I bought from a dealer would do the trick for razors for my lifetime. The rest, I have no explanation for! When we're buying stones, it's the surprise of how it is, I guess, that eggs us on to get another one - especially if we're thinking that we might be getting a real deal on something that we find outside of the normal channels.

I probably would only get half of what I spent from a dealer on my first stone, but that's the essence of dealers. He gave me a stone that I had no risk on, and I paid a risk premium for it.

Every one of my jnats that is good will impart about the same edge. Every one has a much different action or behavior in how it gets there, though (I don't buy multiples of the same thing).

I don't want to jinx myself, but I've gotten the good sense at this point to start selling off most of my stones, albeit little by little. The good thing about them, though, is that they don't rust.

Anything other than my Suehiro 20K. Why? Because I get exactly what I am looking for with it and I get it every time I use it with no fuss.

I've never had any interest in stones from the UK. Dalmores, TamO's, even charns. I'm sure they're great stones, they've just never appealed to me.

I've got two Eschers, 5 coticules, a set of single grit Nortons in 4 & 8, a set of Choseras 1k through 10k, an old Tam 'O Shanter, a Shehiro 20k, Lily White Washita, Soft Arkansas, Translucent Arkansas, Black Hard Arkansas, and one long Swaty.

I've finally realized what a friend told me 40 years ago, "If you can't be satisfied with what you have, you'll never be satisfied with what you get."

Say that to say .......... I'm not interested in any other stones.

Arkansas stones (never had one that would qualify as a razor stone but have tried several), C12K, or Shapton GS30K (I love the 500-16K).

I've tried over a dozen coticules & haven't been satisfied with any of them...but am still fascinated by them.

I have tried several and have one Japanese Asagi finisher, don't see the hype.

Mueller stone: good for knives, but why when you have stones for razors.
