Went to touch up my edge on my Norton's 8k stone, and it has been corrupted with (I think) the 1k grit. Can I just "flatten" it out of there, or will it just dig in deeper?

If this is a new, or relatively new, 4k then this is a common occurrence. There will occasionally be an errant larger piece of grit embedded in the hone--usually just in the outer surface. Just lap it a bit and it should be fine. Lynn has said that sometimes you have to lap off up to an eighth of an inch to get past the bad stuff. You can do that, but I prefer trial and error because I am hone-cheap, so I'd rather lap and test and repeat only if needed.
Actually, the stone is 8 years old. It's just sat for a long time. I'll try lapping with some 2000 grit sandpaper.
Make sure when you lap it to have the sandpaper on a flat surface. I use a 1/4" thick piece of plate glass 12" x 12" square with smoothed edges for like $6 I think from a local glass store.
That is unusual for an older Norton (new ones are terrible IMO) but just lap it and see if it helps. It will take you forever to lap with 2k grit, try 600 grit or 1k at most.
If I understand correctly there is on spot making one scratch per pass? Are you sure it's in the stone and not on it? I give all my stones a good wipe down under running water before using them to make sure they're clean. I give my strops a good wipe down before use for the same reason.
It had more than one embedment. I lapped it with a cheap diamond hone, then the paper. It got rid of it. Thanks for the responses.
thank you useful to know
