Both purchased today. The bench hone is over one foot long, two inches thick, and 3 inches plus across. Any help on ID would be great! Thanks in advance.

A natural coticule on top, and a twenty dollar bill...
The Coticule is a very good stone for razors, going back hundreds of years.
The Monster one, i dont know its very dirty, do you think its a natural stone or man- made?
Can we see a pic of the bottom of the stone?
I dont see any saw markings on the sides probably a man-made stone, looks a little rough in grit as well, couldnt be that good as it was obviously used as a coaster...
Mike compare it with the Droescher you got today as well.
I disagree, I think it is a natural stone. It appears as though there are straight saw marks on the sides as if sawed by a reciprocating gang saw, and the one end at least appears to have radial saw marks. My guess would be a sandstone but the pictures aren't the clearest when viewed on my phone.
I think I know somebody that has one of those :<0) Maybe..
In fact the whole front of his house is done in them and the fireplace. :roflmao
Wait and see if Wolfpack knows.
Run a dang razor across it a tell us what you think :<0) You got a few Gold Dollars right ?
Big one looks to be an offcut from a window lintel or padstone. The mounting is suspect. It has no signs of oil or water damage, or the blackening that we get when honing. Perhaps it's something more mundane than a hone, Like a flower press, Or book binding weight. I could imaging 2 of them working pretty well for scrapbook weights as well.
If it's natural it may well make a decent hone, and indeed someone may well have been using it for that. So clean it up and get it lapped and see what you have won.
Edit found something similar.

Ha! I do have a rather large Llyn Idwal about those dimensions (is that the one you're thinking of Pups???), BUT honestly it's too hard to make a guess about this one based solely on the pics. Off hand I'd agree with MARTIN... looks to be a man made tool stone to me.
Yeah that's the one. Not only can I never remember the name but it could be for pink all I recall. It's just struck me that there probably isn't too many stones that size and may be alike :<0)
AntiqueHoosier is just going to have to test drive it and and show us some pics of the stria. Maybe on an axe ?
I am also thinking of natural and to add to the pot of possible names Gwespyr.
So you have a nice bevell setter - big size and exelent midle range hone for razors Now if you get a descent finisher you can hone razor after razor ha ha ah
Yeah the small one looks like a combination coti & the monster looks kinda like a Charnley Forest to me but I need a new eye exam! Great score............
I'm reading the big one as sandstone. Give it a real good stripping of muck, pop it on a polished granite tile or some float glass with sic or wet dry and see if swirls show up on the surface of the hone.
