Would call it a Coticule under normal circumstances. But this one looks like a Synthethic type of something....
Can you add some slurry shots here?

Still fairly new to the honing process, hopefully I did it right. Light on dark and dark on light... Is that correct?

There is loads of information on coticule and how to use it. It's a well respected rock. Not all coticule is the same, Some are hard, some soft. The hard ones are generally more sought after for razors and there was a really good video I watched a few days ago that went into detail about how to use a softer one as a finishing stone.

What you have there is a Coti glued to slate backing. Coti is great but the backing is ehmm..... backing to protect the Coti side from breaking.
That was an amazing video! It seems to me, My coticle is so small I don't know how I can be effective in using it particularly doing the X pattern. That magnification that he showed, was simply stunning. It seems to me, that using the circular method is a no-no, your best bet is to go with an X pattern I don't know what that looks like but I'll have to look it up.
Have a good watch of the videos by
