So I stumped my toe on this silly rock at a flea market....
Well, perhaps it was in a glass case..... I have not even bothered to look for such a stone as they seem pretty scarce and prices are to match at times.... but, there it was, staring at me, paper label on the end of it reading "Gelbgrun' with E & Co underneath.... It looked as if someone had tried to sharpen a chisel or other narrow tool with too much pressure on it, so there were shallow scratches on the surface. Other than those marks, the surface looked as if it were unused.
The seller, usually demanding high prices for his wares, must have been in a tight spot, as when I was about to hand it back to him, he said he might go lower... I said how low, and after he responded, I handed over my money and took possession of it. I won't say how much, but lets just say it was a fair price for a 3 line Swaty in excellent condition.
Taking a closer look, while missing the slurry stone, and the box also missing its bottom, the label inside the top of the box was intact. The label on the bottom of the stone was quite tattered, but there is enough to leave no doubt as to its origin. It is 1/64" shy of 2 inches wide and it's 5 3/4" long.
I spritzed the labels with a bit of laquer before lapping it on my 400 grit Atoma. All the scratches were removed and it still rolls off at both ends from the original flattening. There is a tiny ding on one edge, but a tiny bit of sanding on that ding and it will cease to irritate me. If I lapped it completely flat, that ding would be gone, but that is a lot of good rock down the drain, so I'll live with it until I, or whomever is it's new owner down the road, wears it down to that point.
I suppose it could be looked at as a consolation prize, I passed up a near mint 4/8" Boker and a 6/8" Wedge, but both were in the $50 range which was out of my mine, after the Escher.
And naturally, the obligatory crappy phone photo:
