Is that the Gold Fifty Cent razor hone?
The stone is probably lumpy, very hard and you have to grind away half the box to use it…
It is an Apex waterstone. I have seen Apex Thuringers before. I have a Stukenbrock Thuringer with a label that looks even more like an Escher label.
As said here its a product from Apex Schleifmittel KG which was based in Sonneberg too, i would tend to say its a typical Thuringian stone.
Founded 1925 from Hermann Reimann, based in Sonneberg until 1949. the company is still in Family ownership till today and they are still active. More on their history can be found here (german):

This stone is currently on ebay. I just thought it was funny how other companies even 100 years ago were playing follow the leader.
Hi Peter,
I knew you would chime in. It is about time you visit Laar to see all these hones in person.
It is a grey Thuringian stone, not as fine as the Hohenzollern or Y/G Escher. I haven't used it for ages. Box is very similar to the Barbers' Delight box.
Stukenbrok is one of the first mail order companies in Germany. Its catalogues are collectors' items and some have been reprinted. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stukenbrok

On page 78 with article number Nr. 1218 they show an Escher Stone. Actually either to be used with water or oil ;-)

no no guys...if you read this never use oil....!!
Price to this time was 1.50 Mark
Thanks for posting those photos Kees. So close to the Escher label. I suppose that is why they began warning people to only buy the stone if the label had the Escher signature ...........

No sure on that Jimmy, it could be that they offered a "customers Print" for the stones. I mean something youre doing for really good customers....
You could be right that it was an imitation, but it looks to good on the original that i think it could be a special print for the catalogue Company.
