hones 19 pieces 2 have labels looking for info on the rest

first off hello and thanks for this informative site.i collected these over 40 years .i am mostly into knives,but anything with a blade interests me.i found this site and researched hones and found a wealth of info.i posted photos of all hones,some have layers ,stripes,or solid colors.all were lapped with 120 grit on a granite surface plate to clean and expose the true surface.trying to identify as close as possible from photos this collection.i would like to hear your opinions .the large hone laid crosswise is a labeled escher.no idea of what the color would be.they mostly all look some shade of gray to me.the stone behind is a norton -probably oil stone-included for color comparison.there are some interesting colors.the escher is among the softest-cut quickest on the lap-a few of the lighter stones a pretty hard and didn't produce a dust-lapped dry 120 grit Norton metalite-any info appreciated.XXXXXXXXXXXX i sharpen on a granite plate with wet paper and dont use them.XXXXXXXXXXXXXX i want to give the best description possible.i realize identifying hones is not easy.does it cut good-is finish keen enough etc.i thought that you might like to see a variety of stones.i included a photo of my first hand forged knife ,the escher is 10 1/4 long for comparison.thanks.jim

They look nice. The knife looks great too.
Most of the stones are Arkansas/novaculite.
Mentioning that you'll sell them is not a good idea, and under normal circumstances is not accepted on the non-private discussions.
Now back to the stones, is any of them double sided/combo stone with two different types of stone on each side? Any that look man made? Norton aside.
From the first photo, I'm not sure about the first two and the last, the four in the middle are Arkansas/washita stones, the last one could be one too. The first two could be Thuringians, the Escher is a high grade Thuringian basically, but I'm not sure and I wouldn't advise you to sell them as Thuringians without being sure.
From the second photo, aside from the blue/gray/green one, the rest, if they aren't man made or double sided, are probably Arkansas type too. The second, white, could be something else, the first could be the Canadian kind.
On the third photo, most are again the Arkansas kind, with the purple one looking like a Belgian blue, or "Lorraine" variety. The next long one, I'm not sure.
On the 4th photo, the 4 stones on the end look interesting, I can't say with any certainty what they are.

Why do you prefer the sandpaper over the stones? Sure, it's faster than natural stones, but buying quality man made ones will save you a lot of money on the long term, and time. You have too many Arkansas/washita/Canadian novaculite type stones. Try them, sell the ones that don't suit you and keep the interesting ones. For the blue/gray ones as well as the Escher, again test them, and keep the ones you like.

So you want us to identify and describe your stones so you can sell them on Ebay?

So your third post in 5 years and you basically are asking us to identify and effectively write descriptions of these hones you plan to sell?

Gentlemen, I understand you, but these last couple of days I have seen a lot of ...kind of angry posts.
I thought SRP wasn't such a place.
Of course we are not some price evaluating site, but if a neighbor knocked on your door, showed you a stone and asked you what it is and how much it "fetches", I don't think we would be that harsh to him.
He will now either place them on auction from a low price and some of us will see something we like and get it either paying more, our loss, or less, his loss, or he will name them all Thuringians and a lot of people, some among us definitely, will be disappointed with what we bought.
Whether we like it or not, stones is a stock market.
And SRP is a place where everyone is a gentleman and should behave as such! :tameshigiri:

I would agree with your point if your example matched the reality, but it does not. He didn't knock on our door with "a stone" as you so blandly state, but with *19* stones that he clearly states he is selling and asks for identification and opinions. These, by necessity, must be in writing and therefor can be copied and pasted into listing descriptions. If he had also asked for values, would you still be singing the same tune?

Asking for help with one or two stones is reasonable; asking for evaluations of 19 stones is a business proposition.

You know Vasilis maybe we were a bit harsh. On the other hand when fringe members come asking for information about stones with the sole intent to sell them my eyebrow raises. 4 posts in 5 years with no clear interest in the hobby. SRP is for the hobby not for identifying / describing stones for online/in person sales.

If he had worded his OP differently I and the others would have been more then willing to help.

Just my opinion, but I think if he were more involved in the forum the responses would not have been so harsh. As you said sq, 3 posts in 5 years. I have taken breaks from this site but have tried to contribute as much as I could along with many questions. Yes this is a place of massive knowledge and one could read posts, articles, etc. to learn many things without participating but I think if you are passionate about the art you cant sit on your hands too long before getting involved with and/or posting on your own whether it be questions, experiences, opinions, etc.

I only see 3 in those photos, maybe 4 that can be Novaculite. In the top photo, the mottled one is most certainly either soft or hard Arkansas. The smaller whitish one beside it looks like a possible translucent? And the banded one 3 over from the mottled stone, I have a translucent stone that looks just like it. The big orange could possibly be Washita but I can't speak for certain.

A lot of those look like some sort of slate to me, with maybe a few India stones mixed in? Nice collection of rocks, I'll leave you to look up the values for yourself. Site rules, and I'm not an appraiser anyhow.

I'm sure he'll appreciate your input. Just because a person doesn't post it doesn't mean they are not passionate about their hobby. Some people don't have the time to spend on a computer posting away. I'm retired so I have the time to irritate all of you all day long, lol.....Post count doesn't mean a thing if the post is without substance. I have seen some boneheaded posts in forums, including some of mine, lol....

There are ways to encourage participation, belittling is not one of them. Of course this is my useless opinion.

Agreed hrfdez. I'm not gonna disparage him because he wants to sell them. But I won't write a book about them either. In light of that information, I'll tell him what type of stone they are to the best of my ability. He'll have to research value and performance for himself.

I will add that the only reason I pointed out his post count was because having 3 posts in 5 years and then asking for appraisals of 19 stones is far more like joining today and asking the same and not at all like being a participating member for 5 years first.

References to sales were removed from OP and another post by OP.

Gentlemen let's try and keep this thread on friendly terms if possible. If someone wants to help the OP ID the stones that is fine if you do not want to help ID the stones just walk away.

4 and 5 in the first photo are Washita. they generally sell for ... oh ya.. I forgot.

Sqzbxr, it's time for you to play that concertina for us to lighten up the mood.

Regardless if he was selling or not, this could have been a great learning experience for new honers getting into honing and trying to learn about different hone types. He has quite a few different types in there. The OP could have worded things better and maybe not posted all 19.

Maybe it's just me, but maybe the 'harsh' responses should come from mods and mods only. Maybe the rest of us should be gents and let the mods do their jobs. I knew when I read the OP, he was gonna get hammered. Personally, I don't think common members have a right to treat other members with such disdain. Of course my opinion and $14.23 will get you a Starbucks coffee.

Agree. When I see stuff like that and spammers, I try to resist the urge to post hoping it will 'go away'.

Thankfully, the mods here are good at their 'jobs'.

The knives look ok but need a lot more handsanding to get rid of the grinder marks.
And if the second one is a railroad spike, it's too soft to hold a knife edge. There is only maximum 0.2% carbon in them, and likely not even that.

FYI, I was *thanked* by a moderator for reporting the original post and not reprimanded for mine. He (the mod) also mentioned that he considered removing not just the sales elements of the original post, but *all* of the OP's posts. The mods can only address issues when they are brought to their attention, and looking out for the well-being of the site is everybody's business. That being said, since more of you seem offended by the responses to a flagrantly illicit post than by the post itself, your priorities are clearly in conflict with my own. While I don't agree with you at all. I would like to try and explain my point of view so you gain a little insight into why I chose to write something after reading this post. I think common members should write what they would like. There is no rule against it I have found in the SRP rules. Respect- well I'll get into that a bit deeper down.

First up.

Disdain - the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect;

Consideration- careful thought, typically over a period of time

Respect - a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements

Now that we've broken it down I would like to state personally that I never felt that the Original Poster was unworthy of my careful thought or my feeling of deep admiration. I personally felt he didn't go about posing his question the right way and that could be for any number of reasons of which I believe it boils down to the fact that he hasn't been active enough to know about forum etiquette and generally what members will and will not positively respond to. ChopperDave, your feelings that the common member shouldn't say anything when something like this happens is in my mind not a great idea. That is like being at work and doing something wrong but your co-worker doesn't say anything at all. They know your not doing something right but they wait for a boss to see, when they could have stopped it at the start before the boss got involved at all.

We should act as a community and look out for each other. If needed moderators can step in as in the case of Iz who removed certain aspects of his posts that originally drew fire to the poor guy to save him from being roasted. If he takes anything away from this thread, since it is a learning experience for us all. Hopefully in the future he will realize what will get him help and what won't.

Now to get to the gentleman part

Gentleman - a chivalrous, courteous, or honorable man

Chivalrous - (of a man or his behavior) courteous and gallant, especially toward women.
Gallant - (of a man or his behavior) giving special attention and respect to women; chivalrous.

Right off the hop this doesn't apply to us in this situation on this forum.

Courteous - polite, respectful, or considerate in manner.

Polite - having or showing behavior that is respectful and considerate of other people:
Respectful - feeling or showing deference and respect: (Deference - humble submission and respect)
Considerate- careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt to others

Now here is where we could have improved a little bit. We did not show behaviour that was feeling or showing humble submission and deep admiration for the original poster. We also failed to be careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt others due to the nature of our responses which he clearly took offence to. For this I apologize as I could have worded things better on my end instead of getting my back up which was not acting very.. (look below)

Honorable - bringing or worthy of honor:
Honor - Noun -high respect; esteem: Verb - regard with great respect:

So acting worthy of honor would have been to politely PM the man instead of soaking him in gas for the next guy to light up. I could have also improved here as well.

So now that we've got that all sorted out. You are right. We should be more gentlemanly to those seeking our advice and instead of scorning them we should lend a helping hand.

Post count means nothing other then you've got a lot of free time on your hands.

I agree with you that posts like this need to be brought to the moderators attention before they can be effectively dealt with. Looking out for the sight it top priority.. these guys seem to want to do it by trying to act righteous when someone like you or I say something. Which I also feel is an improper thing to do, getting on the active, contributing members back for standing up for their site. It's very weak.

On a side note every time I say I am done participating here I make it back eventually. No matter what I say I don't get banned for some reason... Oh well. If you must cease participation I wish you all the best.

Attachment 244314Attachment 244315thanks for the info,i took some better pics .this knife is 52100 alloy(timken bearing race)the railroad spike was a test.it forges like butter compared to 52100.i don,t shave with a straight razor but keep my blades pretty sharp.my original post was more about the colors of escher stones.i collected the others and included them to show the colors compared to the escheris is there a publication out there that describes the subtle differences or is it determined by the box.i have good eyes but they all are some shade of grey.i should not have said they were XXXXXXXXXX.i spend my time in the shop ,not online but go to bladeforums on occasion-friendly informative site.thanks for the help-those that chose to.jim

Man! It must be pretty boring on the forum lately! We need to see some hones! :D

Figured I would add that I am a "member" and there is nothing common about me.

Common - showing a lack of taste and refinement; vulgar.

Sometimes we are blunt in our feedback and it is good to remember to be gentlemenly and also sometimes we need to call a spade a spade. This poster seems to be blatantly advertising blades and hones while we argue amongst ourselves and he gets more views as a result.

Jim, if you care to read back a few posts I wrote a lengthy post. Some of which was relating to being a gentleman. It's not a one way street and resorting to name calling is puerile.

To be honest with you. Your original post before it was modified did mention that you wanted to "get rid of" all of them since you like sandpaper better.

Calling us ladies and Mr. Iz your majesty is uncalled for as well. You are not winning any friends acting like that. I wish we could discuss stones instead of behavior.

I think it would be best to have this thread deleted from our memories because it has gotten very off topic.
