Is it normal to get these scratches on my welsh slate from making a slurry? I've already lapped them out a couple of times before--each time rounding off my slurry stone a little more--only to get them back again. It's downright maddening!

How much pressure are you using?
Try using just the weight of your slurry stone and a finger or two.more time rather than pressure etc.

Ok. I can try that. I do use a lot of pressure. Seems like it would take quite a long time to get any slurry up with just the weight of the stone though. Wow... If it'll save me from those scratches it'd be worth it.Quote:

On the other hand, its a natural stone which could contain bigger particles within the matrix.
Quiet possible the slurry stone is harder then the base stone.
Vermont slates do this. I actually had one coti that liked to do this. It would release the odd bit of particulate and chew itself. I think it has to do with inconsistent makeup
if you want to make slurry faster round one of the corners of the slurry stone very well and rub it on the base stone. With Jnats that method makes slurry easy from even a very hard tomonagura.
Why slurry at all? Just use a coarser stone than this one before you go to the slate. I have an American slate that was part of a window frame from a building built in the late 1800's that works great. Never slurryed once & it has been a great stone.
Are the scratches hurting the way the hone works? I am the same way as you & don't care for the look of scratches.

ive had this issue with a coti, the gokumyo 20k, AND A JNAT or 2. The issue i had was not from a nagura but from a well used dmt. I found that the scratches werent really causing any issues. Like you, i didnt like them, so i looked for ways to get them gone. I tried using different slurry stones. For example, my coti slurry stone polished the gokumyo 20k to a glass smooth finish. Now i have a very fine grit DMT (8k grit) and that works too. All in all, its more than likely purely cosmetic. Also with use they should go away.
I've had that happen when a large/hard piece of particulate got released from one stone or the other. Scratched my stone to h*** because I was using a fair amount of pressure. Needless to say I've dialed back the amount of pressure I use, and it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. It bugs me to no end, but I haven't lapped out the negative space and it doesn't seem to have affected the stone's performance. I figure eventually it'll work itself out.
Lately, I've preferred to use a fine DMT (perforated surface) to create slurries on natural stones deemed necessary* (coticule, slate, honyama). Works well, the slurry being from the honing stone itself, and no real pressure is needed.
*Like Slawman, sometimes I move into the "why is a slurry necessary?" camp.
Honestly, if you have - and are using - synthetics in your progression it probably isn't necessary. It's just fun to play with. At least that's how I view it.
