Gritty Nagura
Hey Guys,
I bought a large Tomo Nagura, from a trusted source .
Last night I tried it out. As soon as I lay the blade on to the slurry I head a crunching sound. The slurry was gritty , not to the eye but to the feel and sound.
I figured , maybe the grit had come from the untidy edges . So I pulled a piece from the underside and took it too a diamond plate .
Made it all nice n neat with bevelled sides.
Same results , gritty slurry that destroys an edge and the deep scratches are visible under the microscope.
I've e mailed the seller but I think he takes a while to answer all his e mails.
I'm just wondering , is it a case or a duff Tomo or am I missing some thing ?
Cheers ...

There's coarse and fine naguras. Some suitable for honing razors others aren't.
The other thing is: when you raise a slurry larger bits may crumble from the sides. That is why many users laquer them.

I also have a small piece of micawa that is my finest micawa - finer than the mejiro unfortunately its a little grainy also
There was a sand layer on the one side and i cut it so its way better now , but is a hazard anyway .
It can be fine , but it can release a small grain that will tun you back on the midle grit
If you can send it back or contact seller Those naguras with grains are usable for knifes only

Yeh it is defiantly a mistake by the seller..
I'm eagerly awaiting a response from him.

Turns out that the seller accidently sent me the wrong stone..
As a replacement I was sent this super hard large Nagura..
It did gauge my Nakayama . I might have to cut some lines into it?
I will shave off it tonight ..

Just had a shave after finishing off the blade with this new hard Nagura slurry.
I have had a bad day today so I was convinced the shave would be not so good.
Boy was I wrong . The finish on that blade is something special.
I have a few Naguras and prefer the softer ones but this is by far my best Tomo . Really special..
Many thanks JNS
(I think i'll Dremel the sides smooth and seal it up nice although I'm not prepared to cut lines into it yet)
