I am using a King 1K for bevel setting. It's ok for most of my blades bu I have some that were tempered a little harder than what the King can handle with ease. I am open to any advice. What do you all think of the 1K Shapton glass? I love my new 16K & I think I would like to build up my Shapton glass stable.

The Naniwa Chosera or professional seems to be very popular. Using mine with a slurry from the brown nagura that comes with it works very well in restoration bevel setting. I have not looked back since I got mine.
I've had the Shapton 1K Glass and I switched to the Naniwa 1K Pro and I like the brown cleaner stone for creating an extra aggressive slurry.
The Shapton worked fine, but it felt gritty to hone on.... the Naniwa just has a better feel and it seems faster, and I *think* I get a smoother finish.... I have a King 1K and 800 grit, both sit unused since I got the Naniwa.
Naniwa Chosera for me, I cant comment on the Shapton. When I first started i read loads of reviews on the best bevel setter, the Chosera always trumped all. Ive never felt the need to look for a better one.
I own the 1k "specialty stone" and is quite nice for the price. It feels less "chalky" than the higher grit models, more similar to the "professional". However, it does feel slightly softer.
When I experimented with the "green brick", it seemed to leave a lighter striation pattern than the specialty 1k. It was a little bit thirstier, although that could be due to the thickness.
Naniwa 1k chosera. Best there is IME.
Another option for a bevel setter is the vintage Carborundum # 118. It pops up on eBay fairly often; mostly in the 4 inch. It does show up in 8 inch sometimes. Like last week, an auction ended on election night for "3" NOS eight inch number 118's hones for a total of $9.95. I was watching it & forgot they were there. One bidder took them. The buy of the year. :shrug:
I have a few of them in 8 inch & they are around 900 to 1100 grit approx. They are great for old Sheffield wedges & leave a nice bevel to build on.

My bevel setter is a 1k Naniwa Chosera. Works like a champion.
After that it's usually an all Shapton Glass progression up to 16k.
I've never used the Shapton Glass 1k. Being that they are so fast I'm guessing that you won't get the feel and finesse that you want from a bevel setter that you will get from the Chosera.

Chosera 1k, and get the brown dressing stone. Naniawa's dressing stone turns the green brick, into a grinder. Without deep damage to the edge of course.
In the meantime and if you haven't already tried, you can get a little more out of that King 1k if you slurry it.
To recap, as I understand it... the Naniwa 1K Chosera and the Naniwa 1K Professional are the same hone except that instead of the Chosera base, the thickness of the hone has been increased and the base is not included in the Pro line. So it's 6 of one or half a dozen of the other.
I would think that the Pro hone, mounted on an acrylic or polycarbonate substrate ala GSsixgun's method, would make the Pro hone the better buy if one had the choice of the two systems, but alas, the Chosera line is no longer available in North America, having been replaced with the Professional line. (Yes, you can mail order from the orient and get around that)
I am thinking of putting my Naniwa on a substrate, but I actually like being able to use the side of the hone for those nasty warped blades that like to turn into frowners when honed on a wide stone. I don't need it often, in fact only a Ralf Aust 6/8" is giving me this grief, but I've seen these kinds of blades before... I'm sure I'll run into another one eventually.
Once again, Shaptons are nice hones, but in the 1K grit.... I'd go with the Naniwa Pro + the brown "turd" as it is often called, for those times when you might wish for 400 or 600 grit hone. That green/brown slurry cuts like crazy and when you end up using pure water... the Naniwa has a smooth feel and leaves a smooth finish.

[Edit]: I should have added that I use the Shapton Glass stone holder with my Pro and SS hones. The SS are a perfect fit, just like the Shapton glass hones. The Professional stone is slightly shorter, but still doesn't move around on the Shapton holder, so I don't feel the urgent need to mount it on a perfectly sized piece of plastic. If you use a threaded rod type hone holder... all this is moot.
I like the Bester 1200. Very easy to use and more wear resistant than the King.
I have a king 1k but rarely use it over my Chosera 1k. They both work well, but the Chosera works quicker.
Personal choice, I like the Chocera 1k, mine however is on the traditional Naniwa plastic base, which all of my other Naniwa Superstones to 10k, are also on.
I guess I'll have to be the sole Shapton GS 1000 supporter: it's a good hone, you can slurry it up with a DMT to get extra cutting power or just work it with water for an excellent bevel setter. But wait, there's more: no green liquid draining away from it.
IMO the Shapton glass stone hoses the King 1000, both in cutting power and in general durability and flatness. The Chosera is good but all that green dye puts me off.
Another vote for the Chosera. Had the naniwa ss 1k but upgraded. Cuts quicker with a better finish. If it's good enough for the pros I can probably make do
+Chosera although i have nothing to compare it to since its the only 1k ive used.

The 1k Shap Pro leaves deep scratches & is not an ideal bevel setter for razors. It is great for speedy edge repair, however it requires dilligent mid stage work to prevent a chippy edge.Quote:

The Shapton range I use for knives only now, apart from the 500k which I use for serious chips and alike.
I moved to the Chosera range and never looked back.
However I now hone exclusively on jnats , my Chosera range is deader than my Shapton range.
Excluding the 1k of course.
I have become quite fond of the Naniwa Traditional 1K stone. Excellent bevel setter! Feels more like an old waterstone but functions and results similar to the other Naniwas. Very nice price point on this one.

I love the Shapton Pro 1.5k for setting bevels on razors without geometry issues. I have the Chosera but I find the feedback of the Shapton more akin to a natural stone I guess. I'm glad I have them both.
I have the Naniwa Superstone and Chosera 1k hones. From everything that I have read, I assume that everything that I am about to write will apply to the newer Specialty (former SuperStone) and Professional (former Chosera), but I will point out that I don't have the newer versions of the 1k hones.Quote:

It cuts faster.
In my opinion, so far, the Chosera 1k still seems to be the best available 1k hone.
I have the 1k, the 1.5, and the 2k. I agree with you that the Pro hones feel a little more like a natural hone. That does not make them better or worse but they feel different. Between the Chosera 1k and the Shapton Pro 1k, the Chosera leaves shallower scratches. Of course that is not a problem if you have the 1.5 and the 2 to follow the Pro 1k.Quote:
