I'm getting ready to purchase a Naniwa 8k and probably the 5k soon. Do you prefer the older Superstone version glued to a stand or the newer Specialty Stone not glued to a stand? I already own a stand for my 12k Specialty Stone but wondered if there were advantages to buying the glued on stand Superstone, like less warping.

i have the SS glued to a stand and still fight some warping. i do like not having to have a extra stand that i need to swap them out on. i chose the SS over the specialty stone because of the stand and the price difference. haven't tried the specialty to see if it is any better.
I tend to prefer loose stones. Especially if in an 8"x3" (200 x 75 mm) profile. Fits neatly in my Norton hone cases, which double as a stone holder.
I prefer the height of the stand not as apt to bump the table/counter while flipping the razor during honing. I have a block of wood to raise my baseless hones.
I like a little elevation on my hones. Originally I was a little miffed because I could not find one without a stand. In the end I really like my stand. I am plotting to make stands the same height for the ones that I have without a stand.
i also prefer a hone with a stand when bench honing.
My 1-12 are on stands. the 3-8 are a combination stone. glued together. my 5K and 400 are without stands. and the 20K suehiro came with a stand. I've been thinking about gluing the 5K and the 400 together to give a little more height. clearance for the hand you know. I really prefer stands to keep my hands from hitting the table top.
The first batch of Naniwas that I had were with stands and the second without stands. I prefer using a clamp holder. Another alternative is to cut a 2x4 to the right length and glue some meshed non slip matting to it. The hone will sit on top and give you all the clearance you need without having to bother with clamping and unclamping.

That's a pretty simple fix. I may do one for mine when I get to the point I need em again. I like a good 2-3 inches clearance so that would do perfectly.Quote:

Another thing to think about is the coast of the hone with stand vs the cost of the much thicker hone with no stand. I'd rather buy the thicker hone and use something like a 2x4 with non slip mesh glued to it placed on top of a non slip mat to keep the whole shebang from sliding around on the table. You get far more useful hone that way and you can't hone with a plastic stand once you wear the hone attached to it down far enough.

Although they are slightly more expensive, I purchased the Naniwa Sharpening Stones that are about 3/4" thick rather than the thinner Specialty Stones. You get twice the stone for about 25% more money. The extra weight makes the stones more stable on the benchtop. I normally use mine with a universal stone holder, but I have used it on non-skid mesh. Another nice thing about the thicker stones is that you can stand them on edge for more uniform drying after use.
I have all my Nani's on clamp stands and really like the extra height it gives.
All of mine are with stand. I like the height but I don't like how badly they warp.
I'm guilty of standing mine on end too, but it's caused a few cringe moments when they've fallen over. So far it hasn't hurt anything, but it's a bad habit that I need to get out of. Maybe some sort of wire closet type rack would make a solid drying shelf that I could lay the stones broadside on to dry... :hmmm:Quote:

One thing that I will point out is that you don't actually have to clamp the clamp stand. Just open it slightly more than the length of the hone and it will sit in there securely without having to bother with any clamping or unclamping.
I went ahead and purchased the 8000 grit Superstone with stand. Hopefully it will arrive this weekend.

I got lucky and found a roll of rubber so I made a lot of these blocks. Passed out all but the 2 I have here. Did my work bench in rubber too. If I hadn't been so lucky or if you want to make 1 of your own I would suggest getting a sheet of rubber gasket material at the local auto parts store. The other thing is you can adjust the height by using thicker piece of wood.
Like Phrank I like to grab and go and with this block I can grab my Nortons, stick em down, flip em, toss them back in the well, change to what ever with this simple solution. Shown in the picture is my Zulu Grey. Something about those metal clamping stands makes my naturals shake with fear :<0)
I purchased a Suehiro 20k stone just for the nice rubber base for my Naniwa's. :cool:

Chaps, save yourselfs time and frustration tyring to make a holder and just use the toshi dai that comes with the Gok 20k :D

I have tried finding a drying rack to fit the stones, but the spacing on all I have tried is just a little too narrow to fit my Naniwas. The dish racks would work well with the Specialty Stones.
I only have a chosera 1k and I prefer it without a stand.
I like to hone in my hand and I also use the narrow side of the stone.
