And I stand corrected. Apparently there is just enough of the label left to ID the hone. Nice find!
Now I need to protect it the best I can. Any recommendations for what kind of lumber to make a hone box out of??

Hmm...I've got a few that were made of cedar. Looks good and smells kinda nice. My vote would be red oak though. Nice sturdy wood, and should be readily available at Home Depot/Lowes. Unless you've got a really cool lumber yard near by that deal with neat stuff like Purple Heart, Ebony, Bloodwood, and other neat exotics like that. Then the game changes a bit.
a box doesnt matter if you drop it. Just a fact. Protect whats left of the label using some sort of clear sealer. I know a lot of people here use a Krylon product for preservation purposes, I forget what its called though. What ever you use, make sure its clear and not "yellow/clear" can really make seeing whats left of the label difficult. And its perfectly fine to use it to seal the sides of the stone like they do with the Jnats.
Personally I just like the look of a wooden box. I appreciate that my Best Arkansas stones, Ardennes coticule, and at least 1 of my no-name translucents all came with a wooden box. I guess you could say 2 of them, but 1 was only a half-box. I guess it doesn't serve much of a practical purpose, but it does give them a nice finished/cared for appearance. It just sorta fits to house a natural hone in a box made of a natural material.
If I were worried about dropping them I'd probably house them in Pelican cases lined with styrofoam or that spongy black fluff they use these days.
I got the stone in today and the first thing I noticed when I opened the box was a broken stone... the stones where packaged horribly but luckily only one broke and it was just the Norton stone. I cleaned and lapped it. The label is sealed and it still had one more surprise for me. It's a dual color green on dark blue!!!
