Thread: Small coticule from an attic sale

Hello!

I just wanted to share with you my last found: an usual coticule with BBW turning in rouge du Salm at the back!

It's 5 inches by 1,5. A fine one.














False impression, it looks like there is a stamp or some writings...

indeed, this is a nice and interesting stone!

however, i am not sure if this is bbw AND rouge du salm (la lorraine) on the back. there is quite some bbw between the la lorraine/rouge du salm layer and the next coticule layer, more than just half an inch. as far as i know there are no natural rouge du salm/coticule combos, but rouge du salm that was glued to coticule (i think i have one of these).

kees posted a link to an interesting paper a while back (A. Herbosch et al. / Earth-Science Reviews 159 (2016)). see page 196, fig.9! edited to add: you have to download the PDF to see all the figures.

as always, i might be completely wrong...

Thanks for your reply and the link I didn't know! I'll do some better pics tomorrow, and a comparison with 2 rouge du Salm that I have here(one tender and one hard).

I'm confused with that one, the back doesn't look like BBW...

I made some new pictures and I was mistaking... the rouge du Salm is more...reddish!





Now, it is in the family...

what a nice collection of coticules! how does the fourth from right perform (the one with the dark lines), if i may ask?

A fine stone. Leaves a nice mirror finish on the bevel, with fine scratches of course under magnification. No visible particule of steel while honing, however it polishes subtly! It works quickly.
I still have to practice it because I found recently.

oh yes, this one! if it performs as nicely as it looks then you have a winner. what a beautiful stone! thank you for the pictures!

Rouge de Salm i not only diferent color - it has diferent structure and composition .
It is faster , coarser nd softer stone woth more open structure . It has a lot of quartz in it . It is a completely another animal - like the falcon and the eagle - they have simillar view ,, but the scale and behavior is different .
