Old stone found

I found this old hone in an old home my buddy moved in to it had lots of very old things in it this was one of them . The one picture is what it looked like when I found it and the other two are what it looked like after 30 mins and 120 grit sand paper . My question is , is there a way to tell what it is or if it would be good for razors ? I have not taken up honing yet I'm waiting to get the feel of everything else first but I will most definitely be taking it up soon . Is this something to try as a finishing stone ? Any input is appreciated . Thanks much

Pictures of the sides, the stone while wet, and with slurry can help with ID.

I can't tell for sure what that is, so it's something of an unknown quantity. If I were to hazard a guess it looks like some sort of slate, and to my eye has potential. Which doesn't say much because they run the gamut from door stop to really good finishing stone. But the only way to know for sure would be to hone a blade on it and give it a test shave.

The stone has potential! It has some indications of a good quality hone. It is similarly to my first natural hone which I still have and use. Go to the "library" and read many of the articles there.

The sides look like the last picture very cut up but I can sand them down too I was just trying not to loose any width . It makes a white ish slurry . I will wet it and take a slurry pic tmrw after work .

Well, I wouldn't go all out on getting the sides flat. But with natural materials any side may show layering or inclusions that aid in identification of the stone. So photos of front, back, and the sides tend to help. Coticules are a perfect example. If just looking at the yellow face with nothing else visible, it could be a coticule or it could be mistaken for some sort of ceramic/synthetic hone. If it's flipped over and we see only the black side, it could be a synthetic oil stone or any given black slate. But when it's turned on it's side, and you see that natural layering of yellow stone meeting black, it pretty well erases any question or doubt what the stone is.

So basically any information we can get can help us help you, so to speak.

The side picture has a Thuringian look about it. Did it lap fairly easily and have white/light grey slurry?

Nice find. Like they say though, the proofs in the pudding.

As said photos of all side, including the ends may help. Looks like slate, possibly a Thuriegen.

How does it finish, will it improve a 8k edge?

That hone appears to have laminations that suggest it is not a typical slate, but I do agree that the unfinished side does look like a slate.

I would say it lapped easy it just took awhile because it had some deep cuts in it ,and the slurry was whiteish gray

The third pic is the bottom of the stone ,all 4 sides looked like that until I lapped the one side ,which is the first two pics
I'm not sure on how it finishes I haven't taking up honing my razors yet ,but it definitely helped a cheap Henkel kitchen knife after a 1k super stone

I'll lap one side down and get y'all a picture

Ooooo, nice! That stone has high quality Thuringian writen all over it. Better yet, I'm seeing some dual coloring going on, blue/green to dark blue possibly??
I bet it is a pretty fast cutter and improves on an 8k edge....:rock:

It seamed to make a good improvement on my kitchen knives off a 1 k pretty fast ,but I'm no knife sharpening expert

if its to fast I wonder about the stone being a thurigian, its usually takes a lot of laps even after the 8k stone,, but hey I hope for ya,, also,, it doesn't seem to be the normal size for the thuris,,, good luck Tc by the way you can also pack up your hone and send it to some of the hone masters here to test it for you till you know what your doing, in the right hands they can let you know a lot about how to use and what you have Tc

Here tcrideshd, a little extra information regarding Thuringians. Dark Blue being the slowest and faster cutting as the color of the stone gets lighter, blueish green to light green to yellow green. So, the lighter the color, the faster cutting it is.

I just sold a few Dark Blue Thuri's and Escher's here awhile back in the BST section. I still have one Dark Blue, one blue/green and one yellow/green that will be here on Thursday. They are great stones!!
Plus, I have a reasonably high powered metallurgical Accuscope 3035 microscope that I can examine, compare and give you some pictures of your stone as soon as I get it.

Most of the time this is true, but it's not carved in stone. The darker stones can be faster than the lighter stones in some circumstances. I have a blue Thuri that is much faster and finer than a Yellow/green I have. Both leave a fantastic edge, but my darker one is a much better stone.

I'm not sure that's true even most of the time.

Surely there's always going to be the one or two oddballs in the bunch but the general consensus, if searched on the internet, from well known and regarded sites, that Dark Blue is a slower cutter than the lighter colors. I believe Escher priced their offerings as to coloring and availability. Lesser availability meaning lighter colored and faster cutting stones. Finer cutting too, on occasion.

There are many long time experienced members here who could do you an evaluation of your hone. I wouldn't trust it to 'just anyone'.

If you would like to PM me I can put you in touch with a few of those members who have handled many, many razors and stones for years and years.

IMO. no disrespect to any aspiring enthusiasts, But it looks a bit off for a Thurri?
In the spirit of Tc's good advice, sending it to an expert such as Modine with return shipping for him to send back would be where I put my money.

If you want to evaluate something as unusual as a razor stone, a trip to an expert is advised!

Yes, but as someone with only 7 months honing experience, I would say you're not the person to tell someone what type of stone they have. There are others with much, much more experience that I think would be better suited for the job.

With a few years of learning from MODINE, I would happily recommend him as one of the most knowledgeable persons about hones and their usage. Along the same lines I would cheerfully recommend Utopian and randydancer. These and many others have paid their dues for the seven plus years I've been associated with this forum and others. Dues being a willingness to help and expend the hours of life needed to give hands on honing experience to individuals.
And..to spend their gas money to get to a learner's home.

Well, as to why all this misplaced anger was inserted into this thread I can only guess. But that is not my problem or concern.
I'm here to help guys that are newer than me asking for help. If I think I can be helpful you can be sure I can do just that. I apologize to the original poster who was needing help. Under normal circumstances in other forums things like this do not take place. Instead of working together you have people jumping on top to take control. Again, I apologize but, I will not stand for it. Get the help you need from whom you choose.
