Is this hone still good?

So pulled my adoration hone this morning and noticed these very grainy spots.
I read the review over at razorandstone. I know it's a great hone, as y'all have affirmed.
I know hones can be ruined for various reasons.

I also noticed that it seems the grey is the finish side. I've read that they sometimes mixed up the powders at the factory. But in turn I've also read that even tho it feels rougher to the touch it can still be finer on the blade ( which I can not comprehend, maybe someone can enlighten me?)

However, it is quite apparent which side is the finishing side in this case! The coarse side does have large grit in it but the reason that it still can work on the blade is because the surface of each piece of grit has been burnished smooth.

You might be concerned by the chipping on the right side of the hone just under the circled area. As long as you hold the hone with that chip on the side farthest away from your hand that holds the razor, it will cause no problems.

Basically this. Sure I see large particulate matter, but to me that doesn't mean the hone is compromised. It's not like this material appeared mysteriously from the nether, it was in the hone as is the day it left the factory. So if the factory surfacing is still present, it should perform about the same now as it did then.

Really the only way to tell for sure is to run a blade over it and see what the hone does. Hopefully it does what it should! :tu

Congratulations sir. The only way to tell is to test it. When in doubt first run a pen knife or something you don't mind damaging an edge.
Here are some instructions that came with mine. If anyone has more info please share. Depending on how the hone was stored, surfaces and material can oxidize over time.

The pinkish side is the finer finisher at least on mine. Can be used dry or with listed surface preps. I would recommend the surface be cleaned of any of the listed preparations after use.

The gray side cuts fast and has glittering specs present that indicate carborundum. Polish the pink side with microfiber cloth and you will notice a sulfur smell. Thanks for sharing have fun, hope this helps some.
