Golden Rule Cutlery Barber Hone - any thoughts on this?
So, I bought a Golden Rule Cutlery Barber Hone mostly because it looked to be in decent shape and due to the fact that I live in Chicago, and I liked the history. There were a couple of references to it that were positive, so I figured it might be worth taking a chance on it.
Anyway, so I got it, and realized that it wasn't entirely level and was a bit roughed up in the middle, so I figured I'd try lapping it (the first time I've ever bothered to try with a barber's hone).
I drew crossed lines on it with a pencil to make sure I was getting it, and then used a "Franz Swaty Three Line Hone" (yeah, a knock-off, but it's flat and harder than just about anything else I have), then started lapping. Did it dry and also did it with some running water also.
The surprise was how fast it went. The Swaty knock off was MUCH harder and cut through the Golden Rule fast.
It's definitely a softer stone and seems like it would be good for touching up an edge.. at least it "feels" right.
Anyone have one of these? Any info, thoughts?
