Thanked: 4821Let’s get this thread back on track, ignore the nay sayer and talk about rocks!
As a rock hound I find this thread pretty cool. The way they are shaping the hones leads me to believe that it is a very soft stone. I was just in Oaxaca and did not even think to ask about natural hones. Of course my Spanish is so weak I’m not sure I would have been able to ask the right people the right questions.
I was just testing my local finds yesterday. I love rockhounding. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

HAhahaha...LOL.
Speaking of finding some "random" rock and giving it a try...IIRC you found a pretty interesting specimen yourself, the "Shaun Stone", and hasn't it basically toured the world being passed around to rave reviews?
Really, Christ on a bike, how do people think these things were discovered in the first place, "The Neanderthal Times Reports Rock Can Sharpen Spears - Get Yours Today!!"....

Thanked: 246Right on. I have found several "crappy" rocks in the ground as well. They seem to put a serviceable edge on a razor, but I guess they're no better than concrete and I should probably not talk about them in case someone gets the idea that I'm trying to advertise them for sale. Although some of us actually do like to find and test stones, some must be resolutely set against it I guess?

Thanked: 4821Well Phrank that is more or less a true story. Toured the world may be a bit of an overstatement. I had found some pretty great rock veins, that several people from various areas found to be a very enjoyable hone. A large landslide cut me off from the area. I am currently exploring some new ground and some new rocks. Perhaps I will find either a great bevel setter or another finisher. It’s all about the hunt for me.

I love testing new rocks too. It was what brought me to straight razors. I started with knives and synthetics(chosera) and found natural stones. Sold my synthetics exept my 400 and 1000 as those are hard to beat. I have naturals from all over the world and always have a eye out to find new ones. Glad most everybody likes this thread and will give a update when that monster arrives. Thanks Guys! Stay cool rockhounds!

Thanked: 3I too am a Rockhound and love the hunt. Where i live was under the Champlain sea millions of years ago and i have access to couple of very deep abandoned quarries. Started when i first got into sharpening knives and over the last few years made the transition of using them on straights which is really cool!!!
Toroblanco...thanks for the thread i enjoyed the pics (rock on!!!)

Thanks b2012, I knew the rockhounds would enjoy the pictures and the journey. In all my travels I have only found one stone for sharpening(a knife bevel setter). I found it in Clearlake while camping. They only thing was my mom liked it as well and she repurposed it to her garden, Lol! Thinking about it I think I know were I got my love for stones! Every time we travel she brings back a few. Never thought of that untill now. malaverdiere you know those guys would be the wrong guys to mess with! Hahaha! Thanks rockhounds!

So, what kind of lapping equipment does one need to turn a rock into a hone?
