A lot of folks who are good at knife sharpening believe honing a razor should be easy. When they try shaving with a razor they honed, they learn that the two processes are different.
I can easily shave arm hair honed only with my 1k Naniwa, but it would tear my face apart if I tried to shave my face. I could shave off a Naniwa 8K, but only if I were desperate. For my tough beard and sensitive face, 12K and higher is where I want to be. I like to use 0.1 micron CBN spray (around 160K grit) for final polishing of my edges.
I have a nagura stone which I used on the 12K for polishing. The edge came off of that with a mirror finish. I was surprised and more than a little happy.
Can you describe the nagura?
