I'm fairly knowledgeable about straights, but pretty novice about hones. I picked this one up at a flea market as I thought it was possibly a coticule, if not some other natural bi-material stone.

By the way it is roughly 2 inches wide by 6 inches long.
I would be shocked if that’s not a genuine mined-in-Belgium natural coticule. When you lap it, you may some patterning that could tell you more.

Also, try lapping the dark side. If the slurry is black or dark grey, the backing is worthless slate.
But if the slurry is milky brown / purple-ish, it's blue whetstone. In the past they used to make blue yellow combination stones.
These days they use mostly black slate.
I'd be all in on saying that's 100% a coticule. I love the ones with a little bit of character. You usually see them just plain, with a solid cream color. I love the ones that maybe have some blue lines running through them, or peach/pink spots. You can find real pretty ones sometimes. Don't be alarmed after lapping this one if some of those lines turn out to be right in the stone. That's just the nature of a natural coticule.

The backside is purple/ maroon, which was leading me away from blue whetstone as I thought that was blue. The variation in thickness of the 2 layers made me think it was natural.
I'm really excited about using this one, always wanted a coticule but just couldn't justify the cost.
Yeah you'd think so but no. Yellow coticule slurry is yellow, but Blue whetstone slurry is not blue :)Quote:
